Title: Let there be a Festivus for the rest of us. Holiday type thingies.
Post by: Unorthodox on November 27, 2017, 02:20:36 PM
It's time again for the darkest time of year.  Holiday season.

Well survived the Turkey days.  (yes plural for us)  Was mostly ignored at my parents, so that's a bonus.

Wednesday, it was like someone flipped on the switch to full holiday [jerk, sphincter] driving.  EVERYWHERE.

I did make a half-hearted attempt to hit one store on Thursday to a store that opened at 2PM!  See, one of the cash prizes from work was in the form of gift cards of your choosing, and I figured I could get work clothes for the year.  Anyway, we took one look at the crowds, and just left.  I'll pay the little bit more to shop online.

We went back out Friday morning to get some more folding tables for the Halloween party and got curious looks from even the employees walking out with every table in the store.  Won't be long and I won't have to borrow any tables anymore.

Time to start working the chairs.

Looking ahead, there's several annoying parties upcoming starting next week, and we haven't even really started 'real' shopping yet.  Though none of the kids are asking for anything big ticket or highly sought for this year, so no real worries.

I wish I were poor and lived far from my family so that I had a convenient excuse not to show up to holiday things. As it is, I show up and camouflage myself with cogent phrases about football.

I take it there's no-one there with stars in his/her eyes? ;)

The grandparents are fighting and pulling no punches as to who we take the grandkid to this year....

I'm assuming "both" is not an option.  Is Neither?

hEt's family is facing the dilemma of members moving away for the first time.

We are hosting wife's family on Sat, 23rd, and on Monday 25th we are flying to brothers in Minnesota.  Not going to be fun.

I think a couple years back, I flew between Christmas and Old Years Eve.

Years ago I flew on Christmas day to be with my future wife. The problem was driving the 150 miles in 8" of new snow to the airport. The rest of the trip wasn't stressful by comparison.

Practically at the last minute, My Brother Invited me to his place for T-day dinner this year.  I almost fell down when he issued the invite...

Heading toward my 4 day weekend (fri-monday).

My boss denied me my vacation next week (scheduled since July) because he decided he'd rather take it.  Time away from him was most the reason for it in the first place.  So, even working will be a vacation next week.

hEt's family party tonight.  It usually is only mildly annoying.

Did all the holiday kitchen crap over the weekend.

With Kyle working in West Valley (past Salt Lake), and the boss wanting the family to go to christmas lights together this year, that left the Salt Lake Temple as the most likely outing.

One thing that struck me, at their main nativity this year...SOMEONE made a bunch of prop 'trees' to fill in the space.  I only really mention this as it's now 7 years since the first iteration of my "orchard", and 3 years since I finalized it.  Oh, and several of the folks at the office for the temple down there live in my neighborhood.  I'm sure it's pure coincidence they started making fake trees the exact same way I have been.

One annoyance to make tonight, then a bunch of cookie deliveries to make.  Friday off, Saturday start the party prep.

Is that a typical Mormon temple?

Never seen the 'nativity' in other types then the typical European style. Kinda sweet.

Everyone that sees it for the first time asks what it is. Apparently I don't give rides to knowledgeable Marylanders.

Is that a typical Mormon temple?

Never seen the 'nativity' in other types then the typical European style. Kinda sweet.

That's the Salt Lake Temple.  (Not technically the first, but realistically the first)  If anyone in Utah says they're going to go look at/protest/get married at the temple, it's a given they are talking about the Salt Lake Temple.  Otherwise, they'd specify a particular one.  It's fairly one of a kind.

One thing that tends to set it apart these days is the grounds around it, as the church buys up any area near there that comes up for sale.  they even managed to buy up main street and close it down to form the park where that nativity on the infinity pool sits.  In fact there's a whole huge water feature thing throughout the grounds that would have made Walt Disney envious.  Not really his 'dark water' concept, but similar.

Hence it's place as a Christmas attraction, outshining city parks and other free attractions in a certain respect.

As Cold Wizard states, they vary...but not as much as they used to.  Some years back they determined the Angel Moroni statue should be atop all temples.  Some of them were not designed to have it up top and looked real stupid because of it.  They've been renovating them as a result, and a lot of the new temples (at least in Utah) are rather cookie cutter design the last 10 years or so.

Insides, I vaguely remember the Ogden one prior to redesign from when my parents got married/sealed whatever in there when I was 6-8ish.  The open house after redesign showed it went very mayan/aztec in it's inspiration for decor, which I found rather odd, but kinda cool.  The Bountiful open house when I was a teenager was more European in styling, so there seems to be more variation inside than out lately.

This is my typical view of the one nearest me. (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.0136281,-77.0467513,3a,15y,273.06h,92.81t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s_nLDYd3YX5P259o-hZU2_A!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo0.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3D_nLDYd3YX5P259o-hZU2_A%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D325.57755%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en)

Heh. Knew what that was before I clicked.

Everyone that sees it for the first time asks what it is. Apparently I don't give rides to knowledgeable Marylanders.

"SURRENDER DOROTHY!"

Going fishing for the most complete version (still need to find an illustrator)

A Visit from the Three T-Rexes
by Mike Boggs

Once before Christmas, a long time ago,
Three starving T-Rexes, filled with sadness and woe,
Drooled down at a sheep flock, so tasty and good.
They’d eat them in a second, if only they could.

But the shepherds watched o’r their flocks carefully.
So t’was no chance for snacking for T-Rexes three.
In the skies to the East, a wonder glowed bright
A star with a tail slipped soft through the night.

The shepherds gazed up, agog and amazed,
At the cold new-born star as it silently blazed.
They saw wise men three, upon camels and horse,
Ride toward a stable — rustic, common and coarse.

At the door, they all halted, these kings from the East,
Faced with a setting of hay, straw and beast.
They offered up frankincense, gold coins and myrrh.
They bowed down and worshipped, their treasures conferred.

From out of the stable, came a warbling cry
Of a new-babe’s complaining, his diaper not dry.
The shepherds discussed what they ought do
And they soon decided; they should go too.

So away from their sheep flocks, shepherds hurried that night
To behold in the stable that most curious sight.
And lo, they soon found in the stable nearby
Mary and Joseph and the source of the cry.

The Messiah had come, to bring hope to the world
His halo glowed bright; His great glory unfurled.
Like the Kings from the East, these men bowed and they prayed.
To the world’s newest King, in swaddling handmade.

But up on the hillside, dinos chuckled and danced,
For the absence of shepherds provided their chance.
Down from the hillside, with a most horrible screech,
The three dinos charged, grabbing each sheep in reach.

They chomped them. They bit them. They gobbled them up.
Sheep’s bleating. Good eating! A grand way to sup!
The flock tried to flee, but T-Rexes are fast.
They devoured them all, each one, to the last.

And after the last sheep’s blood did squirt,
T-Rexes looked ‘round for a tasty dessert.
O’r the hilltops, three kings rode away.
Hmmm, just the thing—three royal fillet.

With a bellow that shook the whole desert landscape,
The dinos charged forth; there’d be no escape.
The kings saw them coming and tried running away,
But hunting down kings was simple child’s play.

Melchior was munched, and Caspar gulped down;
Balthazar eaten whole (except for his crown).
T-Rexes stood grinning while spitting out jewels.
For wise men it seems, taste exactly like fools.

The dinos discussed then what they should do next,
Three well-fed and happy tyrannosaur rex.
“That babe’s been a boon to our fate here tonight.
We should thank him profusely; it’d only be right.”

“We need to bring gifts, for He too is King.”
“I think that I’ve got it! I know just the thing!”
The dinosaur ripped out a nearby pine tree,
And lickety-split, soon there were three.

Each of the T-Rexes held their trees by their stems
And covered them over with jewelry and gems,
The trees in the moonlight did sparkle and glow
Gifts for a king, theirs to bestow.

Three crowns topped the trees; silk sashes hung ‘round;
Such riches and gilt were sure to astound.
The dinos with trees made their walk to the stable.
In a story turned legend and then turned to fable.

How three starving T-Rex, on a cold winter’s night
Walked out of the darkness by a single star’s light,
How they brought trees of beauty for the newly-born child;
How they bestowed them and then went back to the wild.

1. God rest ye startving, T-Rexes,
Let nothing you dismay,
For Jesus Christ our Saviour
Was born upon this day,
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray:

O tidings of comfort and joy,
comfort and joy,
O tidings of comfort and joy.

2. From God our heavenly Father
A blessed angel came,
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same,
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by name:

O tidings ...

3. The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind,
And went to Bethlehem straightway,
This blessed Babe to find:

O tidings ...

4. But when to Bethlehem they came,
The dinos ate at last,
Each sheep upon the desert,
They gobbled up real fast;
And of three kings a wand'ring,
They made a quick repast:

O tidings ...

5. With trees upon their backsides,
They came to see the child,
With gold and jeweled sashes
The trees were richly styled;
Placed at the feet of Mary
Then went back to the Wild:

O tidings ...

The Grinch Theme Song
  "Mr. Grinch"

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch
 You really are a heel,
You're as cuddly as a cactus, you're as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch,
You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel!

 You're a monster, Mr. Grinch,
 Your heart's an empty hole,
Your brain is full of spiders, you have garlic in your soul, Mr. Grinch,
 I wouldn't touch you with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!

You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch,
You have termites in your smile,
You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile, Mr. Grinch,
Given a choice between the two of you'd take the seasick crocodile!

 You're a rotter, Mr. Grinch,
You're the king of sinful sots,
Your heart's a dead tomato splotched with moldy purple spots, Mr. Grinch,
You're a three decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce!

 You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch,
 With a nauseous super "naus"!,
You're a crooked dirty jockey and you drive a crooked hoss, Mr. Grinch,
Your soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful
assortment of rubbish imaginable mangled up in tangled up knots!

You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch,
 You're a nasty wasty skunk,
Your heart is full of unwashed socks, your soul is full of gunk, Mr. Grinch,
The three words that best describe you are as follows, and I quote,
 "Stink, stank, stunk"!
