Title: Drones due to military units
Post by: thatsmydoing on June 15, 2016, 06:30:07 PM
Under free market (-5 POLICE), the citizens complain when my air units are in a different city. Is this normal? Even if I re-home them, it doesn't seem to lessen the drones.

Yitzi's patch lets you tamper with your drone settings. You can even set bombers to cause drones but not fighters.

This is similar to planes causing unhappiness under democracy in Civ II.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that aspect exists in the unmodded version.

My patch does, however, enable the ability to do things like exempt 1/1 scouts from the effect.

It's not "air units" that's the problem.  It's OFFENSIVE air units.  In Civ terms, bombers.  In SMAC terms, Penetrators.  You can have as many fighters (Civ) / tacticals (SMAC) as you want.  Helicopters (Civ) / Choppers (SMAC) also make citizens complain.  So do cruise missiles (Civ) / conventional missiles (SMAC), and nukes (Civ) / Planet Busters (SMAC).  If you wanna be a Democracy in Civ, or Free Market in SMAC, you gotta basically become a Jedi.   ;lol  Use the Force only for knowledge and defense.  Never, ever, for attack.

These rules are pretty goofy.  I guarantee you that the hippies in the USA who complain about nukes, will also complain about F-15s, Bradley troop transports, jarheads, and the military industrial complex in general.  And since SMAC was written, we've got post-9/11 militarized police forces and drone strikes to complain about.  It's just a game, and an arbitrary rule in the game.  It would be an interesting exercise to imagine how one might implement the idea of "people objecting to militarism" in a game.
