Title: Civilization VI forum theme - your input wanted
Post by: Buster's Uncle on June 14, 2016, 08:42:29 PM
-So I decided we could use a nice Civ 6 theme.

What would that look like?  Something with Atlas is obvious -and I may or may not use him as a background image- but I saw a forum do really poorly with a lot of peach and yellow.  Looking at the screenshots that are out so far, you see green, green and more green, with some blue and gray details on the map.  -Hmm.  Maybe.

Uno suggested something I'd been thinking - interface elements.  The Next Turn Button and the game readouts and so forth.  I'd noticed some pretty bits there, so I loaded up all the screenies with interface showing and started cutting neat bits out:
(http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1178)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1177)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1171)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1183)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1174)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1172)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1173)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1175)(http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1176)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1187)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1184)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1170)  (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=1182)

-Not too bright gold/brass trim/scrollwork everywhere, a good bit of dark wood, a lot of rich dark teal and flat blacks for background.  Subdued neon green and purple and light blue -and of course black and white- for lettering.

Yeah; there's plenty to work with, there.

So first, tart up the Atlas variation of the new AC2 logo with some brass border...  (These all enlarge somewhat clicked on)

I like the last one, best, but am open to input.

Spacey suggested something with more Civ for a 6 theme logo - I'm sorta married to the thematic unity with the main logo, but in ancient days it was night half the time and the sun rose every morning:

And then I tried, much as I hated to reduce the fungused Earth that was so much work, a different crop of that image, with more Atlas and most of the landscape at his feet left in:

I don't think the coppering of the letters quite works -it didn't want to look quite right as brass/gold, either- but I feel like this is otherwise what to go with.

-Now, I can make a copy of the default theme and commence fiddling...  I'd like to involve everyone in the creation, with all the ideas I can pull, and reactions when I start posting results.  Just remember that art can't be a complete democracy without becoming mediocre at best, and I can't please everyone - but I'm certainly interested in trying...

I like the bottom atlas, with the world left in.  Don't like the lettering... looks red-ish on my screen, like it just took a quick dip in some strawberry jello...

See if this link changes your theme to Civ6: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=theme;sa=pick;u=2210;th=68;d4ed5c85=3d7cbd6119969f727023f39ee2e74dbe (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=theme;sa=pick;u=2210;th=68;d4ed5c85=3d7cbd6119969f727023f39ee2e74dbe)  -All I've gotten so far is putting in the mo' Civ logo w/ the letters back silver, but anyone can follow my progress as I tinker.  Right now I'm poking around to fix the main menu positioning...

For those of you in a specific them who wouldn't have noticed - I've made a tangible beginning of the 6 theme and set it to default in this folder.  Right now it doesn't look terrible and everything's at least marginally readable.  Can't guarantee that will hold at every stage as I fiddle and tweak...

...I'm working on how to do something with the postbit and I think I'll be ready for input today, especially about colors of the indexes and post fields, something I've yet to decide.

Remember, if you're following the progress of the theme, refresh often to see the background art changes...

Okay, what I'm going to try -if no one has any suggestions- is two tones of parchment color, to match the background of the info center at the bottom of the root and the reply box frames, for the index background colors, and two very almost-black tones of blue and cyan for the post backgrounds w/ white letters.

-Not real sure about that last, but not enough black(ish) to match the interface yet...

...The postbit thing aside, I'm very close to being as finished as one ever is on a theme...

Probably my browser... but the text in post / preview buttons on the quick reply is getting washed out due to the blue foreground, which is a different blue than all the other buttons.

Hmm.  It's doesn't seem all that bad to me, but I'll do something about that...

I was going to share these with CFC as suggested theme elements to at least take a non-ugly color scheme from, since I'm not using them, but an admin got uppity, so they're on their own and don't even know they've shot themselves in the foot again.  The tall first one embiggens.

Bumped and posted attn: E_T.  See also the stickied Screenshots thread...

Yes, but in many ways, it is still the goto as well as most active and informed site in the community...

And my account is 12 years old with less than 50 post count....

Dale, I see you've found the thread in question, and as your friend, I have to tell you you're showing your butt and recommend you leave off.

I'd actually commenced the third paragraph of failing to bite my tongue before I got my teeth sunk back in.  There's no argument winnable there, unless you're just looking to pull infractions to try to prove something.  You're making a perfect example for Commodore to point at, man, and that's exactly not what CFC needs.

He's being a [feminine washing] and I called him on it.

I see no issue.

And if I pull infractions, it proves my point.  People just need to chill and have a cup of concrete.  It's the friggin' internet.  It's pointless.

EDIT:
Really??????? [feminine washing] is filtered?  Proves my point here too.   ::)
It's pathetic how you can't say what you mean anymore for fear of "insulting" someone.  This world is so totally [messed up - or loved very much] up.   ;q;

If there's no point, why be unpleasant, then?

I concluded there was no point, too, and I'm profoundly interested in how CFC is run - but there's nothing but potential loss in saying anything, least of all pointing out how profoundly right Commodore is -offensive to the staff, who I'd rather not have offended by me- and how incredibly wrong he is -offensive to him, having a stranger assert he doesn't have the foggiest idea what he's talking about, telling them they're not hard enough, me being right and knowing what I'm talking about not tending to automatically make me any friends.  The staff will listen to what they want to believe, the longer the thread stays in play the more certain more people who don't know what the hell they're talking about will speak up at great length vehemence and persistence, and --- forget it, Jake; it's Chinatown.

EDIT: I didn't put that in the filter, and I ain't married to having it in there.  How strongly do you feel about being free to say douche at AC2?  I'm asking.

If there's no point, why be unpleasant, then?

Because things are going way too far.

Just this week:
- A new Senator is being trashed publicly by the media and social media for expressing her opinion (and also her platform that she got elected on) that Islam is not a religion but a political ideology and therefore should lose all religious State benefits.  She also calls for a stopping of immigration from Islamic nations till the terrorist situation is resolved.
- A popular media personality is being abused and disenfranchised because she expressed an opinion that she is scared for her family of terrorists and that maybe the Senator I mentioned above is onto something right.
- Christmas and Easter have been banned in many schools so as not to offend Muslims.
- Bank branch Managers have been publicly shamed and outed for following Bank rules about headgear and asking Muslim women to remove their hijabs.
- Just yesterday I read a news article where a Sydney school has banned clapping, and instead institutes "silent celebration and congratulation" so as to not offend "people sensitive to sound".  WTF?
- In the same article, a GIRLS school has banned the use of the word GIRL so as to not offend lesbians!

HOW [intercourse gerund] STUPID IS THIS WORLD GETTING?

That's why I'm unpleasant.  Because this pathetic pandering to minorities has gone WAAAAAY too far.

I shouldn't have let the conversation drift where it had in the first place, and let's take the politics to OT where it belongs - like the behavior already under discussion, bringing RL politics into this out of the blue is completely inappropriate.  No more here, thank you.
