Title: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Buster's Uncle on May 14, 2016, 06:27:05 PM
I'm not inclined to take initiative -may change my mind just today, Saturdays being slow- and go look at the same three pieces of six art that seems to be all anyone has yet, but avatars is the thing we do better than anybody else will bother, so I will fly ALL OVER requests.  -Just initiated booting GIMP, in fact, and will bother to copy/paste the three things in in advance as soon as I post this.-

I personally prefer avatars not exceeding 110x, despite the 150x kitten I'm wearing -whom I miss terribly- but up to 150x it indeed goes.  Square or round, I can do fancy stuff with transparent backgrounds, like cutting figures out of the art, or that cute think with the round unit icons 5 had, where some of them protruded from the circle a little.  Fancy takes a lot longer than just size/cropping something, of course.

So roll those requests in, and I'll add a Civilization VI category to AC2's User Gallery as soon as we've stockpiled five, and you'll have done me a small favor in return just asking even if you don't wear it.  Something customized to you personally that no one else would want, so no gallery, is doable, too.

Okay - slow day, and I don't feel like hurrying to the old rounds of various sites, so I did a few takes on the most obvious gimme of the images available so far.

Greatly increasing time and finess/showing off you go down the samples attached...  I'm curious to see how the semi-transparency levels depth effect on the last looks on the forum...

Hmm.  The effect was too subtle on that last, to my eye - try this:

(Better - I think I'll go ahead and make that new gallery category and throw them in.)

I love it!

I'm not there with VI, but if you ever see a Hannibal... that would interest me. He's a perpetual favorite of mine to play as or against.

Of course.

I wish we knew more about Hannibal - the Romans surely knew more about him than has survived, but they were interested in him as a threat, not a person.  I think he had to have been interesting, though, being such an accomplished man.

Yes, I wish he's had a book called "Lessons in Leadership" it would rank with "Art of War".

Ya know.....would Atlas be able to hold the Eartholantern?

(ONLY if you get bored.  it would be a temporary change for me at best)
Title: Re: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Buster's Uncle on May 16, 2016, 03:03:46 PM
Yeah; he totally would.

I'd have to make him a lot smaller to get more of the EoL in and draw more hand, depending on when I think there's enough EoL to recognize, but not a huge job, I think.  Clever, and I'll make you a 80x to use elsewhere.

It'll be later today, but I'll boot GIMP now...

With this post, I tie my record at the Frog Pond.

If you'd like more EoL worked in, today while I've got my working copy open that I can back up to before I cropped out hand I drew in would be the time to ask.  Putting the lighting effect on to match was tricky - the rest was pretty basic.

Ya know, I think I've seen a slightly modified screenie that had more of the earth...let me try to dig it up.

Okay; I'm not going to bother with the semi-transparency effects or the round unless you want one or both, and I have to erase letters over, but hold on...

Hmm.  Need to find a larger copy of EoL instead of scaling the 80x avatar up for this...  The protruding from round is actually easy, though...

BUncle, if you save in GIMP's native format (xcf? something like that), then all the undo stuff and cropped things stay accessible, IIRC
Title: Re: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Buster's Uncle on May 17, 2016, 05:09:34 PM
Yeah - I even have a copy of this last attempt saved that way -it is .xcf- but I rarely bother, 'cause it's memory hog...

The lighting on the edge of the EoL was the toughest part - the rest was just a little tedious.  Had to make the sky fit the new shape, but drawing new sky in not high-difficulty level.

Rough night.

Exceptional work.  I'll have to see if I can make that change from the phone....know I can't from here...
Title: Re: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Buster's Uncle on May 18, 2016, 02:03:24 PM
You know - looking at it on the forum, I'm glad I saved an .xcf copy - that crop is good, but the way it is, the top of the EoL being cut off looks wrong.  Needs the rest of the main shape, if not all of the stem, to look right.

Firing up GIMP. Stay tuned for something a bit narrower sometime today.
Title: Re: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Buster's Uncle on May 18, 2016, 04:29:14 PM
...For some reason, the .xcf copy didn't save the edit history like it should, which adds considerably to the job of putting back the missing part - but I'd backed up to before I merged layers and resized when I saved, so I confirmed that I recalled correctly the 227 width, and size-matching won't be a problem, just color and having to do a little edge backlighting.  I'd not done that last at the top and ruined part of the stem as I reduced ovals shading, so not a total disaster of lost work.  It needs to be bluer in the center anyway for depth/sphericity, and now I can get that when I wouldn't have bothered if I'd been able to back up before the crop...

I'd sorta like to rotate the face upward around 15-20 degrees to look more like the thing's sitting on his back in 3 dimensions, but that's getting into very high difficulty and work with a flat image, having to basically redraw - too much sugar for a nickel, and would ruin Atlas' palm seeming to rest at the top of the mouth, a very happy placement accident.  -So balancing it awkwardly stays in, alas.

Setback with a power blink losing 20 minutes or more of work this morning that was waiting for me to get back to it, and ohmygod, how did it get 9:30 P.M. already.  No guarantees for tonight, as I've got two other things on the boards I want to tackle before bed and I probably won't get both of them done, either.
Title: Re: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Buster's Uncle on May 19, 2016, 10:09:35 PM
Ahhh.

I think I managed to increase the sense of depth while I was at it, too.  -And the cutoff at the top just bugged me; oohh YEAH - that looks so much better.

Do it, Uno.  PUT THE BETTER VERSION ON!
Title: Re: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Buster's Uncle on May 25, 2016, 03:43:40 PM
...Uno told me to get screenies from the announcement video for 6-related images to work with while the pickin's are slim.  I've got GIMP booted and the vid up to view in another tab, so this is finally going to happen.  S'pose I ought to post them in the screenshot thread before I cut them up, too..

There's a good Roosevelt one to be had today I'll get screenies up soon.
Title: Re: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Buster's Uncle on May 25, 2016, 06:23:42 PM
I just saw that - the release video was a bunch of marketing images not that closely tied to the actual game anyway, I think.  I'll play a little with the new stuff before I look at the preview video, then...
Title: Re: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Unorthodox on May 25, 2016, 06:35:28 PM
The IGN screenies if you click through and click to enlarge them could be mined for some good avatar bait, I think.
Title: Re: 6 avatar thread.
Post by: Unorthodox on May 25, 2016, 06:41:38 PM
Research, civic icons jump out.  I thought the leader heads might be big enough in the upper right, but the screenies don't appear as big as the last set they posted, so I'm not so sure that would be usable or not.

I thought some of the unit shots I already saw were usable, if slightly odd angles...

Got it - I'm thinking I'll not even touch square avatars, 'cause everyone can do those so easily for themselves.  Round, round with protrudy bits, and transparent background cutouts if I have time.  Those last are very labor-intensive.

Post by: Buster's Uncle on May 26, 2016, 01:36:57 PM
Oooh.  Dunno if I could do much with an EoL brand at that size, but that would be the ticket.  I didn't actually think you'd use any of those -nothing's going to top Atlas- just easy to do while I had the cutout versions open.

There were some age of sail ships in the original screens I posted that could get similar treatment.  Click through and embiggen them from IGN PC Gamer and THOSE screens should be big enough.

edit:  Hmmm, I mistook IGN for the source of biguns Let me go check PC Gamer's new shots.
