Title: Do you have school spirit?
Post by: Unorthodox on May 04, 2016, 01:26:18 PM
Kyle's choir concert last night at the high school.

All the alumni are supposed to stand and join hands for the shool hymn at the end.

Bah Humbug.  I didn't sing then, what makes you think I will NOW?  (had I not met hEt senior year, who liked the crap, there's a decent chance I would have never even been to an assembly in high school)

Got me thinking, I know I'd heard it mentioned by foreigners how odd the US preoccupation for college sports and whatnot is, so poll.

School loyalty? Sure. I liked my high school. Junior high was a mixed bag of really good teachers, a couple of awful teachers, one reprehensible teacher that gave off creepy vibes and 40 years later I found out that he'd been raping one of my classmates for those 3 years, and a lot of people I never want to see again in my life.

I don't get this whole school-worship thing. Honestly, a school hymn? That's one of the most bizarre things I've heard this week, and about schools in general, any time.

Pretty sure elementary and middle schools both had a school song...Are school songs not normal?

as far as the 'hymn' instead of 'song', probably a Utah thing.  Mom was there when it was written, I could ask.

My high school was pretty decent at one of the sports... football... iirc. I tried as much as possible to never be around when school spirit stuff was happening, which was doable because I knew how to get from my school to the woods behind it without being seen. I did attend one game, however, because Darrell Green and Champ Bailey (when both were still Redskins) once attended for some sort of fan thing. But on the whole, while I loved learning even then, school was mostly unpleasant from elementary on up due to me not having much in the way of friends and, later on, motivation to work.

High school, no, university, yes. I follow my school's (American) football, basketball & hockey teams. I follow a blog mostly about those sports, occasionally reading posts about our other sports that do well.

I wonder if it has to do with being into sports, which I suspect some of my generation who are into computer games aren't. (Back in the day there was more of a dichotomy; now with consoles and phones, everyone can be a nerd. Ha!) Also in America there aren't really minor leagues for football & basketball like there are for baseball & hockey, so college sports fill that gap.

I was voted most school spirit of my class, so yeah, I got it, or had it.

When I got into my 50s and was living in a different state, I had a growing urge to avoid revisiting the past, even when I'm visiting my parents. On the whole I like my memories, and like to remember everyone as young and vibrant as they were, the same with the insides of the buildings. This isn't just how I feel about my school, but my home town too. I drive through, I seldom stop. Now if I run into somebody, that's another matter.

As it is, my social circle is now pretty much, wife family, and a few weirdos like me on the internet.
