Title: Is Nintendo Dying?
Post by: Unorthodox on March 22, 2016, 09:22:57 PM
News the Wii U is stopping production, and delays on a lot of it's upcoming games.

Handheld market being pushed out by mobile apps.

Is Nintendo soon going the way of Sega?

The Wii/Wii U in our house are a curious beast.

Wii was a novelty the kids liked for a time.  The Wii U is the best damn Netflix box in the house, and the tablet/controller is a hell of a universal remote/second TV.  I guess it could play games too.

The kids all have a 3ds gameboy, and as long as they crank out pokemon there, they will all want a version.

No plans to buy an NX or whatever is coming next, and I can't imagine a compelling list of features that would entice me.

Nintendo's still alive?

Huh.

Between Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda, it's hard to see Nintendo disappearing.  I do think they'd make a heck of a lot more money if they just started making those games for other consoles.

That said, where the new Xbox (we do not have) and PS4 (we have) both wanted to be media devices you controlled everything else through, the Wii U is the one in the house that fills that role, thanks largely to the wonky tablet/controller thing that works as a second screen and universal remote all in one.

I refuse to vote in this poll. The only correct answer isn't shown as option.

Nintendo is already dead undead to be more specific... it died a long time ago and is only kept alive by the same old gamelines it always had, making new graphics and controls for old storylines (or even no story at all like all those party games).

I don't think Nintendo will collapse anytime soon. But yes, it might be that they stop investing into console development and put their efforts into making games for plattforms that are already in use (Smartphones, Tablets or other gaming consoles).

I thought that when I saw the headline - then was surprised it wasn't already a poll option...

No option for "I've never used Nintendo in my life and have no idea what it even looks like"?

You've never heard of Mario Brothers?  I find that difficult to believe.

Heard of the game, yes. As for the thing it's played on, I wouldn't recognize it if I found one outside my door and tripped over it.

It's like she's from a whole different country...

BUncle, there are very likely some aspects of gaming I'm familiar with that you're not, so can we leave it at "I never got into that kind of gaming so I have no idea what it even looks like"?

Well then, if you know the game, you should at least be able to comment on them as a game company.  I, myself think they'd be better served JUST making games.  (they are working on a pokemon mobile app from what I understand, so this conversion might already be in the works)  It's not a poll JUST about the hardware.

(I thought the NES outsold PC's in all of North America through the 80s, though.  I don't think they ever topped 30% )

I guess I'm in the same boat. I sort of went from a pre-Atari-Matellivision console that played pong, squash, tennis, and a shooting game to DOS games, and have gamed on computers ever since.

Super Mario brothers were those Italian plumber guys from the arcade Donkey Kong games, right? Aren't they supposed to be the most successful game of all time? I mostly played shooters, or SEGA Kangaroo in those days, because Donkey Kong was always busy.

Nintendos are those Game Boy things my friends' kids got addicted to. I think kids today are addicted to iPads instead.

Why should I be able to comment on something I've never played? There's a reason why I don't comment in the SMAC threads here; I've never played a complete game of it and most of what I know comes from the novels.

I was a pinball junkie, never really got terribly into the arcade games.

My kids/cousins would provide anecdotal evidence to the contrary.  Gameboys/ipods/ipads are about 50/50.  With the older kids tending to lean more Gameboy for 'deeper' games.
