Title: How bad is your winter?
Post by: Unorthodox on February 01, 2016, 01:47:49 PM
Last couple days have heard several people complaining how bad the winter is this year.

Thing is, we just barely hit average after this weekend in terms of snowfall.  So, we should end the year a little above normal.  10 years of drought sure mess with what people expect.

Our last snowstorm exceeded last season's entire snowfall. Which would put us slightly above average, since last year was a bit light. Temperatures have been all over the place though, a couple weeks ago it was about 16F (-9c) and today I'm wearing shorts (53f/11c). Probably milder than average so far.

Mild. Sure, we still have snow cover from  whenever. There was rain last night, and there is some bare ground with green grass by the downspout. So the grass didn't get frozen brown before the snowfall. Let's call it snow cover since November.  It has gotten down to sub zero F.  Those things are normal.

On the other hand, it was only one major snow. Everything else was more of a mild nuisance that could be approached with brooms or salt instead of shovels. The subzero weather wasn't a week long episode. So it's been a mild year so far.

The thing is, warmer are holds more moisture, so potentially we could get a heavy snow. Today the high is predicted to be +40 F, tomorrow snow is forecast for most of the state.

Mild. Our temps have been near normal or above, and our snowfall is way below. Today we have standing water in the yard where there should be two feet of snow.

It hasn't been too bad. About average, for this new era of climate change.

It's an El Nino year, so I predict a bad blizzard and extra-large helping of snow in March. Last year we got snow on May 6 (appropriate because people used to swear that hell would freeze over before my province elected a New Democratic Party government - which we did that night).

Another snowstorm lining up for tomorrow.  The only thing that has been a little odd (and GREAT for me personally as it's kept the air clear) is that we've had a steady stream of little storms rather than a couple concentrated heavy storms.
