Title: Preferred Work Schedule
Post by: Unorthodox on December 03, 2015, 01:56:51 PM
Yes, I'm blatantly just trying to generate content through polls, but I'm not going to promise daily.

This keeps popping up at work.

Traditional 5 days 8 hours a day:  Uno's view:  Good for families on a schedule.  Depending on hours, some shifts can suck.  My schedule years ago.

9-80:  This may be a Military contractor thing, never saw it outside that context.  9 hour days, except Friday is 8 hours one week, and off the next week.  80 hours over the 2 week pay period.  This is my present shift, and my preferred one.  Can schedule vacations around the off Friday, or flex time as needed elsewhere.

4-10:  Uno's View:  Good for singles, or families that don't have daycare or other expenses.  3 day weekend every week.

12 hours/3 days.  Uno's View:  hEt's schedule, mine years ago.  Tough schedule with kids.  But, maximum off days make up for the rough schedule.

Whatever fits into all other scheduling needs, which would depend on the situation but probably usually be 5 of 8.

5x8 was less stressful, but might be disappearing as a reality. When I was a printer, I worked 80 or more hours or more a week when demand was high, or the basic 5x8 otherwise.
My brother-in-law, a pharmacist, works alternating weeks: one 7x12 week, then a week off. He doesn't mind it because the first day off is usually a recovery day, then there are 6 days to do "whatever."

I was never on a family friendly schedule. I was a farmer most of my life. Full days might go 16 hours seasonally, "off" days only 4. After that it was a sales job. 6 X whatever... say an average of 10 hours including travel. Then it was an insurance job, which varied widely between busy work, interstate travel and emergency overtime.

I said 4X 10 . It's the schedule I'd always envied. One less commute, one more day off than a standard work week.
