Title: Avatars, avatars, AVATARS!
Post by: Buster's Uncle on June 26, 2015, 03:10:06 AM
With Gamera running around my forum drunk half the time and resurrecting the zombies of old threads from the Pond, I figure, in light of Valka getting me to increase the size limits of avatars, I oughta dust off the ol' Custom Avatar Project.

Below's what I made for myself today for when I get tired of my five-year mission.

This is the place for people (Valka) to post from their own avatar collections, Valka, or creations, Valka.  -And maybe tell a story if they like or ask for help or critiques or whatever.

Requests taken and usually turned around and posted quick.  Getting me to teach you what I can instead a plus, even if that's more trouble the first time.

Did I say anything was wrong?

I need to buzz Green1 again to come get his beer on and talk crap with you whenever y'all can sync drank rampages - stories about gaming culture w/ some (wrong) conspiracy theory stuff for occasional spice.

Avatars are fun. It's strange to think that just 11 years ago I didn't even know what they were, and had a heck of a challenging time to figure out what to use and how to upload it.

During the past while, though, I've been entering a lot of avatar contests at TrekBBS, and getting a bit more inventive (still amateur compared to other people, but I'm happy with my efforts so far).

I'm running a Doctor Who avatar contest there now - voting phase is still going on until early tomorrow morning (MDT). The results so far are not at all what I would have thought they'd be...

Can't wait to do some lessons.  What do you not know how to do that you'd like to, Val?  I'm considered an ascended master of avatars, as Gamera will confirm.

Dumb-dum de-stickied the Custom Avatar Project years ago, BTW, Jokemonkey - no hesitation about using his powers in personal matters.

Among other things, things to do with animation and how to excise one part of a picture and make it available to use in others. An example would be the Lake Minnewanka Squirrel. The original photo was of a honeymoon couple whose photo at Lake Minnewanka got upstaged by a squirrel who popped into the frame at the last minute. The photo was posted on the National Geographic site and later went viral. At some point later, someone made a "squirrel generator" site and I was able to use that... but it's defunct now.

I'll post some of what I was able to do with it, though. That squirrel sure gets around, not only for avatars but also for lolpics.

Nothing there but smilie how-to instructions, actually, but a pretty complete course and all the technique scales up.  Questions welcome.

Dunno.  Should it?

Valka, that squirrel does look familiar.  Would he happen to be the one with the testicles, cropped for propriety, if you know?

What have you got to do the graphics on?  I still remember a lot of how-to on the shoop, but I very much prefer GIMP these days for most things - it's a free download...

This is the version of the photo I've seen most often, although I did see the other. And yeah, it's better that the picture was cropped, because TMI also applies to squirrels...  :-[

I've got several squirrel lols in my closet over at ICHC, but it's going to take time to find them. I've got many, many thousands of pictures and relatively few have been sorted. I've been suggesting to TPTB there for years that we be allowed to tag our own pictures so we can find them more easily (they only get tagged now if they make the front page and it's staff that chooses the tags).

I use http://www.online-image-editor.com/ (http://www.online-image-editor.com/) for the most part, though I've tried others.

I have tried to understand GIMP. So far I have not succeeded.

The controls are an aircraft panel - all powerful graphics editors are, I think.  I can teach you GIMP, as much as I know, one function at a time.  That's how I learned it myself.  The smilie tutorials are heavily screenshotted, which should make them easier and teach a lot of the skills you want...

Actually, if you wanted to track down the full-body shot of Mr. Squirrel, we could neuter the TMI, and you'd have more options.

I just did my latest submission to the Miscellaneous Avatar Contest at TrekBBS. The theme was "a celebration of your country" - anything that says "my country" to you. So I chose a photo of The Three Sisters, an iconic mountain in Banff National Park, and one which my grandmother used several times in paintings she did.

There were other things I could have used - recognizable Canadian things like beavers, moose, etc. But this is something that has more personal meaning. Those mountains are like old friends, in a way.

Title: Re: Avatars, avatars, AVATARS!

Probably. This isn't the view I'm used to of this mountain, since I always saw it either from the Trans-Canada Highway or a nearby campground. They're much closer there.

There are many photos of this mountain online, from various angles, but I needed one that a) wasn't watermarked; and b) wasn't so widespread that I couldn't easily crop and reduce it down to a good picture that's 150x150 pixels, which is the maximum size for an avatar on that site.

Here are some other photos (and probably a few paintings, as well): The Three Sisters (https://www.google.ca/search?newwindow=1&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1067&bih=493&q=the+three+sisters+transcanada+highway&oq=the+three+sisters+transcanada+highway&gs_l=img.3...1584.14352.0.15313.41.17.2.20.20.0.604.2677.0j7j2j1j0j1.11.0....0...1ac.1.64.img..24.17.2699.rMp2Yo2nfqs)

To my great surprise, I was tied for first place for awhile, but the avatar of the Apollo astronaut with the flag on the Moon has pulled ahead by one.

Reminds me of the view of the surrounding mountains as seen from the Grindelwald valley floor, in the Swiss Alps.

I had a really strange dream a few years ago, in which my grandparents and I were stopped at our usual place in the campground across the highway from these mountains... and next thing I know, I'm climbing up toward them (the one on the left and the one in the middle) with a picnic lunch, and sitting down to eat! Somehow a clover and grass-filled valley appeared between them, and it was all so perfect.

Now obviously that's not possible in RL, but I think I was just really missing my grandparents and the trips we used to take every year between Red Deer and the Okanagan, in British Columbia.

Then I'm not sure what you're getting at. Taylor Swift is a pretty woman. I can understand why other people would find her attractive.

All I meant was that when you're used to seeing someone using masculine avatars, it's a little strange at first to see them using a different kind of avatar. No inappropriate connotations intended whatsoever, just that it's a very different kind of avatar from those I'm used to seeing you use.

Some people at CFC got confused when I changed from cats to Carl Sagan while the nuCosmos series was airing; someone obviously too young to have seen the original series asked if that was a picture of me sitting in front of the radio telescope!  :o

Then there was the time on one of my gaming forums when I decided to hell with it, live daringly for a change, and used a "Venus rising" avatar I made on the Doll Palace site (everything was covered that legally needed to be... barely). It shocked one of the guys, though, so I took it down. My current avatar there is quite modestly dressed.

I certainly recognize it as one of your former avatars, but I never understood who it was or what it meant.

Sometimes I can read a person's mood by their avatar changes, same as some people's clothes will reveal their mood, IF I pay attention and IF I can remember what they were like the last 3 times they wore the same outfit, color, whatever.

If you can find a good source (and this may be difficult, a cursory search yields bad animation and fanboy fantasies), a good Teela (he-man in case you don't know) avatar might please hEt.  I know she's been wondering what to use, but also know she is a Teela fan.

Backup might be the lady from heavenly sword.  Don't recall her name.  But chances of non-sexualized source material on that might be even more difficult than Teela.

Tertiary backup would be Leelu.  (would imagine simple enough to find, but haven't gone looking.  Spelling?  5th element)

Yeah, surprise her, we'll fix it later if she don't like it.  She mostly posts from the phone, and I'm guessing fiddling with settings or trying to upload for herself would be unpleasant there.

Teela would likely be the most amuzing to her.  She'll probably come back and want some yoga symbol or something, though.

I'm not sure when I started calling her boss, but it's been prolific, and in public, for years, and never has bothered her before.  I know a lot of married men use the term as a pejorative, but that's never been my game.  I'm sure it confuses people, and they're probably not sure what to think.

Most pet names are too common, and her given name will get 20 people in public looking at you too.  Not many people answer to 'boss' for some reason.

I think I will as soon as I get the next Shop item up; I can easily add them to the User Gallery, since FIleZilla is already up and logged onto the server...

...Lordy, the EarthO'Lantern is lit from the wrong side (and can't be flipped w/o reversing the continents), it's the wrong shape, it's the wrong angle straight-on, and it has to be rotated right on the stem axis (and not like it's a 3d model or anything where I can just rotate it.).  It has to be angled, positioned and lit just so to look like it belongs in the picture and the smallest size possible that covers what it's replacing w/o crowding the pumpkin kid out.  This is even trickier than the moon project.  I've been working on this for over an hour 1/2, but I'm finally in the home stretch...

I didn't like that the fade-in turned out not to begin until his head has already come to rest.  Thing has too many frames, honestly.  And the quality of the EOL sucked on that set, too.  So here.

I once had to troubleshoot an animated .gif avatar for Zoid at the Pond; it was legal limit size and should have worked -the forum resizing at all breaks animations and transparent backgrounds- but for some reason, reducing it by 1x fixed it.

Are you sure animated .gifs don't work at the other place?  Are you sure you've tried to put one on that was size/cropped to legal limit or under?  I did the last attached just in case - if that don't work, try cropping 1x before you give up - then try to talk an admin into enabling.  I've got a vague idea that these only work here if from the gallery or I install for you.

It's an issue with volume over there.  We have several thousand online at any given time, and if you let everyone have animations, it'd bog things down in a jiffy.

Mine are actually sort of a blue/green/gray depending on the light and your color sense, so not vivid at all, but where's the fun in that?  I'm also about 20 years older and twenty pounds heavier than it looks, but the former was not by design.

I believe I will add this one to the gallery...

That one was fairly popular on Cheezburger a few years ago.

I don't go there very often anymore. So many things about that site just don't work. I can't even fave (aka save to my own lol closet) my own lols unless someone on my friends list does, and then I can fave it when their post appears on my dashboard. If nobody on my friends list faves it, I'm out of luck.

All they do is push Facebook, and I sent in a support ticket the other day because I wasn't able to post a message to someone who friend-requested me and sent a friendly note after I accepted. I've been feeling annoyed about this, because that person may be feeling snubbed and I completely don't want that. This person has some really cute stuff in his lol collection (I used one of the uncaptioned pictures to make my latest one there).

Now see, right here is why forums don't work as actual democracies - with luck, everybody has an opinion on the big questions, though I haven't had an awful lot of input even there when I solicit member opinions - but nobody bothers to express an opinion about the mundane calls like making a Cat category in the user gallery, yet those decisions still have to be made, and somebody has to actually do the work, preferably in a timely fashion.

There is indeed a Cats folder now - I, your Benevolent Dictator, have seen to it.

You may rise.

My time is worth too much to be pondering those questions.

Nobody should ever be too busy to ponder cats. Even when they misbehave, as mine did today (upchucking on two sections of floor - tiles, thankfully, not carpet), and then sneaking out into the hallway when the grocery order was delivered.

BUncle, I really like your current ink & quill avatar. Did you make that, or was it snagged from a game?

It is a Civ6 avatar I made from a video screencap Sunday - the Writing technology, I think.  There's three different versions in the 6 folder in the user gallery, and I won't hog this one long...

No hurry; you know I'm partial to my Enya avatars here. ;)

I'd been thinking of something I'd like to do regarding Iron Pen, but if this is a copyrighted image, that squashes that idea.

I saw a neat artist's conception of the Juno probe with a science article I posted, and had to make an avatar - now uploaded to the Astronomy & Space Travel section of the User Gallery.

-It's not quite as big as the attachment...
