Title: Smilies
Post by: Buster's Uncle on March 01, 2012, 06:16:10 PM
I've been missing the :broc: as a way to express jubilance, and Rym's fuldan thing inspired me.  :danc:

[Attn: sisko.  While I was installing it dancing Lal, I found the problem with the :1st: smilie and several others since the site upgrade was that for some reason, they were no longer in PortaMx set.  I couldn't figure out how to add them back there -I have a copy of every WPC smilie- so I changed the default set.]

Does anyone have any requests?  Most smilies aren't that hard to make, if not animated, and I personally prefer that we have our own versions of most everything.  At least, let's look for stuff outside the traditional ones of the civ community.

I think I better go install all the SMAC(X) leaderhead smilies right now...

Not getting overwhelmed with a million smiles no one uses and a roster so big you can never find what you want promptly would be great, but I do think we have room for a few more.  Taking requests...

I'm easy.

(I'm also great.  ;bu; ;D)

I may have to move dancing Lal off the always-visible smilies, though - animated ones are a little distracting to have up there every time you post.

i don't like them. i'm thinking of going back to the old set and everything that is not aligned and/or too big will go in the pop-up.

Ugh.  I didn't like the set in place when I got here, but this is the same stuff we just got away from. ;nuke;

they're nice they're flashy, they are the 3D smilies! the current set is just ugly.

ah, and  why call this one a 'nuke'? ;nuke;  this is a SMAC site! it should be called :PB: 'Planet Buster'!

What does a Planet Buster look like ingame? I've never used one. Does it look like a normal nuke?

If you're talking about the semi-colons in the code, yes.  It'll be an adjustment for old-timers, but making all the keystrokes in a code lowercase makes it much faster/easier to type...

No it isn't.

My website is down--I first noticed it the night before last (somebody told me on MSN). My friend seemingly hasn't paid the hosting bill. If I don't hear from him in a few days I'll put my personal site in a subdomain of my KFG site or something.

I can't reply if I am asleep. :O

Most of them are pretty good, although the laughing one and the :D one seem a bit threatening to me.

yep, too much teeth.

And how do I fix that on the grin?

Put some pants on, then.

This one didn't need teeth, anyway.  ;lol

I do think that's a smart-looking set there at the top of the reply form...  The leaderheads somehow look better reorganized.
Title: Re: Smilies
Post by: Buster's Uncle on October 01, 2012, 12:33:31 PM
I believe that should de-emphasize the teeth sufficiently.

I didn't think I could improve on this old standard, and it's perfect for when you enjoy a thread/post/project and want to encourage another poster, but don't have much to say.   ;popcorn

What do I think?  I think I've finally licked the shading to my satisfaction.  I think they look crisp, and good in a lineup.  I think there's a real value to a forum to have it's own unique smilies, at least within the circle of sites that're into the same sorta thing, and often share the same audience.

The ones I'm replacing are better than they look above the reply box - most are animated, which for some reason, doesn't show over reply.  They look better when they're displaying the way they were designed to.  But I wonder if I shouldn't replace at least the ones up there with my own versions for the sake of conformity of size and style.

One thing I don't want is a million of them; it makes it a pain to search out the one you want.  And in that spirit, we want to avoid redundancy.  Otherwise, I'd just add my own and leave the old ones; but you can get buried in smilies real quick that way...

However, I had to add this one.   ;rotflmao  It was an insane amount of work to animate that, but I want this to be a fun forum.

So,  8)  or 8-)?  Hit Reply and consider how they'd look in the lineup...

I should point out that we have multiple smilie sets - you can select which from your profile: Modify Profile>Look and Layout>Current Smiley Set.  I'd actually been set to a lame set all this time while I thought I was seeing the default, which explains some discrepancies I'd noticed.

The sets are messed up right now, because I didn't realize I was overwriting all of them, not just the default set, when I edited in my replacements.  This will be set to right eventually.

...

Enjoy the following:

Okay, this one was easy, because I'd worked on cleaning up a slopily-animated version of Rollseyes the right size before, and it was a simple matter to recolor two frames and change the background frame for consistancy with the other new AC2 smilies.

The best part about no one speaking up is that I get to suit myself...

I am in one of them spells where I crave something creative to do, and this is it today.

I hereby submit one I've brought into size/style conformity, and an older one I ain't rejiggered and don't intend to, but like and am considering installing.

Here's the last of the above-the-reply-box set redone, and barring requests or some inspiration striking, I think I'm finished making smilies for now.

These are all fairly straightforward re-workings for size and general constancy, and not that creative, but I felt that stylistically, it needed doing.

Well, I think I can claim that the default lineup above the Reply Box is much improved, at least for consistency and organization.  I might do some organizing in the Popup yet, as that doesn't mess up other sets and isn't a big chore.  Notions for how it ought to be ordered are welcome.

A real benefit of building a site from the ground up is that some of the old hands would not like looking at my versions of certain favorites of theirs.

All new or freshly-revised:

There is always an advantage to being involved in a project when it first starts. You get tons more autonomy to tinker around as there are less toes and other folks' "space" to avoid stepping on.

Though for forums, its a slow process. One guy I know who set up one for the Gulf South mini gamers ended up having to post news items for himself for a year or two before he ended up getting community. But, since the news items were really hard to get info on events in two states, he eventually got it. Of course, he is not making a living of it and still occasionally deals with nerd wars in his little niche from other groups.

I broke down and added another smilie today: ;sarc

This is an update of my very first smilie, unless ;notes; was first.

-sisko, I recall you being a big user of the woohoo! smilie; should we have a look at adding that, and the companion piece I modded from it, the panic smilie?

It was a lot of work, but I like for us to have our own personality that way.  Them there above the Reply box's a bunch or smilies unique to AC2 - until such time as someboday steals them for somewhere else.  The pop-up's still a zoo, mind, and unlikely to change in that.
