Sorry to have to do this to everyone, but it's sorta my signature piece.

I'm probably going to pass Feedbot as the Number One poster today; stay tuned for my clownish and immature antics over a worthless forum achievement. It's been over 2.5 years since I had a PC challenge before me, and I want to remind folks that it's not too late to try to keep up with me while we're still on the ground floor.

Eh, not clever enough. People say that for location just to be a pain, so the joke on me wouldn't come through all that well.

"AC2" would be better, but it needs more as long as it's short.

I knew first thing this morning that, at 4970 posts, I was going to top 5,000 today, but things have been crazy with the forum software upgrade going on, and I didn't notice I'd done it until I was on 5,004, and it took me hours to get aorund to coming here to note the occasion with post 5,011.

And that's a very good thing.

When we were starting out, I worried a lot about having the last post in most of the forums - which did happen sometimes; looking like 'the BU show' wasn't good for making AC2 look healthy and appealing. But lately, I've not been feeling real talkative, and it's been gratifying to see guys like you and Kirov being so active.

I have been on forums where folks were obsessive compulsive about post count for some epeen. But, I have found you need quality more so than just posting a lot. Some forums back in the day even had to issue out strict rules because folks were doing one word posts and other silly stuff. Fortunately for you, you have that. Although, being a mod of sorts, you are kind of OP when it comes to having post count. Your "job" sort of lends itself to posting a lot.

It's not my job - it's that I like the society of literate nerdz, and I have a lot to say. I was just a street-level citizen when I did 6,000 in a month without trying to. I liked to say then, and I still do, that I ruined all the first-tos of PC ranks for everyone else, thus making the forum safe from that nonsense. I took that burden onto myself.

Which makes me sort of PC Christ figure. 11 to go.

I have approximatley 5% of BUncle's PC in about ~1/21 of the time. So if BUncle where to for some reason to completely fall off the face of this forum soon; (which I think is highly unlikely) I might catch up to him in about 20 months :(. Although I do not really care that much about my post count :).

I do not think spamming and excessive posting are the same thing/problem. I think excessive posting is done by a person who has a lot to say on a variety of topics. This is not inherently bad and can only become a problem if the person does not stop when asked by other users.

On the other hand, spamming is often done by a machine or by a person who wants to advertise something in an inappropriate manner (like advertising to buy a television in the comment sections of music videos). As for the definition of Spam their two primary meanings. The first is a processed meat that is put into a can. The second is unsolicited mass or bulk messages that are sent to other people.

So for me, I think I am a excessive poster rather than a spammer because my posts usually at least try to add something relevant to the topic at hand. If I were a spammer, then I would be trying to sell or get you to look at something that is usually, at best, distantly relevant to the topic in which it is posted.

This more or less hits my position on the mark. Spam is a scurrilous insult when directed at someone for the mere crime of being very active. We could use more of that sort of "spammer".

It means various things to various people, actually. Most often, the accepted definition is one who posts things of little/no value. There's a small set of people from MZO that use it as a term of endearment for those that are active posters of random crap specifically meant to increase a site's activity. Blame BigD, the self-described spammer who at the height of activity could make you all look lethargic. MZO died when he left.

In the case of BU, the people saying it were more likely referring to definition 1, just based on who I saw saying it.

I've never really seen BU as a spammer, though. Thought he was trollish at first, I admit, and there were times I think he actually was trolling me, but there was always a little nugget you could take away. Once used to the style, it's kind of endearing. Not that BU even trolls much anymore.

Troll's, geeks, nerds, whatever other 'class' of online behaviour, didn't held a meaning for me back in my early browsing days. And barely has a meaning for me these days. 'Spam(mer) did, as described above. Especially if content was a far cry.
Mind you, I've done it myself with the right posters&fora. :P

It's just a general term to me to put several kinds of fish in the same frying pan. :D

Uno, the thing I remember you taking as a troll (as opposed to any of a great deal of friendly teasing that I think was taken as such) was a remark you took as a fat slam, but was actually a more innocent reference to a picture Dale had posted the day before of a fellow with moobs who happened to look a lot like you. I was embarrassed when you took it badly, and I wish I'd been comfortable with apologizing and explaining, but sometimes it's better to just drop it, I guess...

As to definition 1, I suppose that and trolliness applies to the Rampage of the Clown Posse, but where does that line properly go? z4ck, east, Gamera and I were joking around and mostly slamming each other in good fun, without malice and not to run up our postcounts (except as part of our running joke about PC). The way that was handled was a failure on the part of management and on the part of other members - we didn't know there was a problem until it had been going on over a month and was too late to head off trouble. I was frequently trying to tell the others to lay off doing it in every. single. thread. long before I knew how much irritation we were causing, and those posts are still there for anyone to find. The others were very young, and as Metal and I often said afterwards, we had a weakness where our ad-hoc circle was concerned, and joined in too much.

The clowning was great fun, the most I've ever had online FWIW, and had we been more considerate of other members and topic discipline, we'd have been doing absolutely nothing but using OTf in a way it was intended to be used. Period. Not something worthy of me taking so many cheap shots for years that saying spam to me without a smile on your face still gets my back up.

If such a situation developed here, I would step on the every thread part before it became a big problem. -Unless I was one of the guilty parties, as is likely. You guys have to step up and ask me to knock it off when I get out of line, not silently resent - anything else is unfair to me as a well-intentioned individual who wants everyone to be happy. Meet me halfway, and it'll never be a problem here.

You got to catch me on a bad day to get me to take ANYTHING as a troll. I normally just let things roll right on by. More things I remember thinking I could have TAKEN as a troll if I chose to (not specifics, just remember thinking that at the time). Don't even remember what you reference.

Some people automatically shove anything grey into the troll file.

I was briefly active on a forum that was dedicated to spam - even had the word in its name. I stopped, because people kept telling me not to say stuff in one post that I could take 5 posts to say, and I didn't post often enough.

It's the most boring site I ever joined, and good riddance.

Sir, I posted 3,000+ times in my first month at the Pond. I doubt this, even though I was guilty of exactly one (1) post just to +1, and that one was a minor troll of Grampa Troll on account of the first-to-Warlord race I lost for eating supper at the wrong time. I hogged every first-to of PC rank after that that I expect the Pond to ever have.

Nobody makes me look lethargic.

-Meanwhile, a semi-thrilling race to second place has developed. Uno is 394 posts from overthrowing sisko, and Green1 is right behind, 420 to go. Uno is a steady contributor, but rat worship and Halloween are coming. Green could get a day off and a six-pack any time and do it in under two days of AAR frenzy starting at any moment.

So it's lots of Halloween projects distracting Uno/giving him stuff to post about v. Green's current job kicking his butt, and it's honestly anyone's race. Smart money's on Green in the long run, but who will have time to shoot into second first is up in the air.

Who will win? Nerdwatchers report mild interest in the contest, though not on the part of the nerdz in question.

Hey, I don't want a big deal made of it, but only our regulars seem to ever look at this thread - suddenly, I find myself a supermod at 'poly. ;lol I've been ~~nagging~~ counseling Aeson about rebuilding the AC over there and, by extension, the whole site, and reporting a lot of spam, with which they're having a big problem. He asked if I would accept powers and cut out the middle man, so the Mighty BotSlayer is back. This'll take me no more time than reporting, though they'll miss my funny reports.

I'd meant to just kill spam quietly -I hate obvious spam threads showing in the root directory anywhere- but Aeson went and announced it in Site, so a certain someone (Lancer) is going to [poop] himself to death in the next few days. ;rotflmao

As long as the posts in question is actual content. I have seen some sites that operate off of "rep power" and seen some misguided nublets answering posts with one word answers. Not being aware that actual content, not numbers is a real indicator of how a lurker or fellow poster will take you seriously.

For example. I have more posts than Kyrub. But, because Kyrub has a working patch (his content) is better than anything I could dream up, he gets a lot more e-rep than you or I do. Not to say that no one cares what we say, or what we say has no bearing amongst the lurkers or posters. But, some content is more valuable than others.

Also not saying that a forum presence somewhere and well written comments can pay your bills, either. Although, it has happened. Ask Derek Paxton (kael -CFC and Qt3 forums)

He's a dirty, dirty Swede, luvs Jeezuz, conservative, early 20s and recent college graduate trying to get a career in teaching going.

His most annoying habit is always defending Ben Kenobi, a reactionary and truly annoying piece of crap even by innerwebs standards. I tried to be friends with Ben -I don't regard being wrong about everything as necessarily grounds for rejecting a bloke, and I don't let the herd do my thinking for me- but Ben blew it, and Nik doesn't see how bad defending a rank bigot makes him look.

My only other complaint against Nikolai is that he didn't believe me when I told him that coming into a quarrel and telling the participants, in effect, 'you guys are both jerks' A.) Never cools off the fight, and B.) Annoys/offends/provokes the fighters. He has this in common with 3/4ths of the staff at WPC, BTW, who like to gang up on a guy who's been cornered and then blame him for resenting it. WPC is currently averaging less posts a day than AC2 as a result, almost 100% Other Games stuff.

Other than that, Nikolai is good company, smart and funny, and a very good guy, and I like the hell out of him. I recommend making his acquaintance.

He's not really Swedish, and I say all this aware that he'll see it. ;)

Also, he loves to troll. And most people on Apolyton, where he comes from, is liberals. Do the math.;)

I think what really made me stay is BU's free tutoring with GIMP. It's a nice skill to have, being able to do things in GIMP. I've even gotten animations put into the forum ( ;waiting) --Mind the fast-playing eyeshift, that is BU's fault ;) --

My IT brother's guess atm is that the hard drive broke down. He'll have a look at some point after I bring him the casing. And if so, will try to recover the data on it. :(
Luckily there's two drives in the casing, so if the main one is gone, I might still not need to buy new hardware if the rest of the casing's content is okay.
All in all, it looks like I'll be without a desktop for at least a week.

We come across the public TV broadcast concert from the US Capitol. She wants to watch that.

EXCEPT BARRY MANILOW IS ON MY TV! ALL 40 inches of him. He's not even that big in person. I can't stand him. GOD BLESS AMERICA, he's gone now! I hope he doesn't come back. /RANT.

No, not really. My wife's goddaughter moved in with us temporarily. The house is kind of an open floor plan, so there's no avoiding the sound, except for bed and bathrooms.

I suppose if I were feeling better, I could have taken the dog for a walk. Barry Manilow is kind of like kidney stones, you never know how long you'll have to endure it, or how much worse it's going to get. I feared he was the host of the show.

I'm a treasurer for a charity that provides scholarships to local youth and also raises money for mentally-challenged and otherwise disabled children to go to summer camp (and gives their parents a rest for a week). Doesn't pay a whole lot but I can put that I was CFO on my resume which will open lots of doors in the future, but more importantly I'm making my community better.

Spam was a poor choice of wording. Because all of my posts were at least tangentially topical, as are yours. High volume of posts tending to brief comments rather than lengthy expositions. But spam is easier to type.

And activity begets activity. Always has, always will.

Now spam - Metaliturtle was spamming this place up hard for a while recently, posting just to be posting and not real on-topic except when he was. Activity creating activity or not, too much of that action is bad for having an interesting OT where smart people discuss stuff thoughtfully. The ones inclined to that sort of posting start getting thin on the ground in a hurry when a place gets too 'fun'.

He and I were in a 'fun' clique in the beginning of the Frog Pond that did about as much as anything else to make WPC fail - I was a newb and half-didn't know any better (I was usually the only one saying let's take this out of this thread where it don't belong), he was an old-timer who did know better, the other two were kids who'd been around the community a little longer than I had, but not long enough. It was all horribly mismanaged by the staff, who should have gently taken us in hand weeks earlier instead of coming down hard after the damage had been done. I thought we were using the forum the way it was supposed to be used, and NObody said anything for a long time, so hardly fair, all the bad feelings.

So some buttholes/hypocritical trolls have never allowed me to live down my early days of high volume and insufficient respect for the topic at hand. I never posted just to post, and this community is sloppy as hell about defining what's spam, just using it as a catchall insult word for posting they don't like; and I regard it as a deadly insult, just so you know. So, you gotta get to know me first, and smile when you say that, before it becomes okay. ;)

PPD of exactly 23 just now as of my last post. I'll loose about .02 percent overnight and make it up 5-10 posts in tomorrow. The math was easy when my PC was at 20,000 and a post came to exactly one thousandth percent -been at it for years and a lot of posts- and I started paying attention to PPD, not so easy as it takes more and more posts, but the futuristic electronic brain machine here keeps track for me anyway...

It certainly has; activity has been very high this winter, considering that I was feeling so untalkative I could barely bear to answer posts directly addressed to me. Previously, activity levels have followed my moods more closely, and, of course, I love it when people take initiative and the place goes on healthy without being quite so dependent on me - that's been a long-term goal of mine for AC2.

Well, when CFC first started, there wasn't any reason to go there because Apolyton had it covered. By the time Poly declined enough to consider other places, CFC was too big and I didn't know anyone there. Their moderation style is secondary, for me.

Table gets the job done, but it can get annoying. They needed to make it more like the List command where you don't have to close every damn tag, it just knows each one is a new line item.

My current PPD is climbing back towards 22, and getting there soon: (21.948 per day) I'm not sure how the rounding math in the software works, 'cause I'm doing less than one thousandth a post - if I posted 50 more times before I went to bed tonight, I'd go over the top until I lost a little ground overnight, sleeping...

(I seriously doubt I'll post 50 more times today...)

It got 6:30, Aunt Nancy had to go, and had missed half of Lawrence Welk, so we put them back in the cage two hours earlier than I'd have rather for their sakes. They lit in vocally complaining, and NOW they wanted me to pet them. They wanted it bad. -But can't spend my life over there -I simply do not set foot out of the house at all lightly- and so came home. I wish that maybe Nancy has someone rig some sort of barrier so that they can have the freedom of the carport in daytime when no one's supervising, but the wall around doesn't quite come up to my crotch, and they could get that high now if they tried hard -or soon- so I dunno if it's worth even trying.

They're doing well and it's working out. I do wish less cage was needed, but there are grown cats and some dogs in the neighborhood, and they are to be outdoor cats...

Time for sunset session here...

I will pass my all-time PC record, 36,041 at the Frog Pond, tomorrow or Monday. THAT, I may celebrate.

I was the newb Asher and various other creeps of the Troll Pit occasionally slandered viciously in the P***a F****r threads because I was everywhere, impossible to miss for people with nothing better to do than hate-lurking Whoopcie. I posted 3,000+ times in the very first month of the Pond, and ruined all the first-to PC ranks after Warlord forever. -GPT beat me to Warlord by a few minutes with a fluke of suppertime timing before the site actually opened to the public.-

I was the Frog Pond's first Deity, and the only one there will ever be -Dale actually invented an extra penultimate rank just for me, to put off the day I'd run the table a while- Roth, number two in PC when I left, took two years after w/o any posts by me to reach where I didn't lap him twice in PC. He's at 14,050 posts today - I just checked. There have been 300,509 posts there ever, and I made over 1/10th - and that ended over four years ago.

I only posted when I had something to say. Period. I still get my back up easily when I hear the term spam applied too casually to other than a sort of canned meat - unless it's Metaliturtle saying it. We were in the Clown Posse, and them there homies may say the "spam"-word to me.

Oh, them. I assume it died as soon as it was founded, just took time for the freshly born body to stop twitching. Based mainly on my assumption of them not having a critical mass of posters to be self-sustaining and some potentially polarizing egos of their own.

Though given your ability for content creation, perhaps my assumptions were somewhat faulty. Though I'm not sure pre-schism Poly was self-sustaining aside from pus and bile production, which could last for decades yet.

I swear to you it had a good start. Civ 5 even gave CFC a dangerous gut wound, and the Pond wouldn't have been in a state that needed me just to live if it hadn't been for that demoralization.

Ultimately, it was Dale, actually. Solver and Spacebot weren't ever leading, he was, believe it or not, and they were dead the second he stepped down, though it took time to show. A forum needs someone talking to people and being on top of everything promptly and making the place look like someone's in charge. -And he was a 5 casualty, like a lot of the leadership even at CFC. Demoralized, the lot that's even still going through the motions.

Me, I never cared about 5 in the first place...

But then it was always hard to believe that people who only posted in OT had the nerve to say spam to a modder and key member of the site's most active on-topic folder.

I'm thinking about this PC stuff and the history today. Passing my record at the Pond is the only PC milestone, I suddenly find, that I've cared about much in about -- five years, I think, since I made Deity.

Those almost three years were a major chapter in my life; I joined Poly 12 March 2009, you know, and as a newb not privy to the issues and people politics, I just went where the love was when the SMACX community went to the new place en mass. In those seven+ years since, I saw the vibrant if tumultuous old place and the promising new alike become pathetic terminal husks, only technically alive. -And CFC become Rome in 500 A.D., a colossus that's the only game in town, but soon to die a pitiful death - and a lot of them know it, but can't change to adjust to it's not 1999 anymore and reverse the decline.

It makes me sad. I've passionately hated all those places for very long periods, but everyone loses when one of them collapses. I think I know what has to be done to fix it, but the prospects of any key people listening is nil. It would take a few people being passionate about the community as a community -divorced from their feelings about the latest games unless they like them- and a lot of hard persistent work for a very long time.

I'm looking it up to find when I made my last WooPCie PC rank, and find I misremembered - Dale pumped Deity up to 50,000 posts when he created and added Transcendi to keep me chasing the top for twice as long, and so I only made the latter. I am the first and only Transcendi there will ever be, though, Roth being not much more than halfway there after 6 years, two of which it was live forum for, and he never spams, either.

Ah. 15-09-10, 18:55 GMT. -That's my 25,000th post over there, and I didn't realize it had been 5.5 years since I had a PC brass ring I cared about in my sights. I've become unrecognizable as the Spam Kong (it's okay if I say it) I used to be.

After that, I did note how many lower ranks above Transcendi I was occasionally, like, Transcendi plus two Immortals, an Emperor and two Monarchs... Ranks lower than 1,000 weren't worth noting.

-It makes me miss the Court Report - for all the teasing and abuse I had to take for making a huge years-long running joke about PC, the weekly report, even when it was a bare list of the top 30 members, rank and PC without my commentary and jokes, was a pretty popular thing, though few cared to admit it.

I think in the same way, a lot of being a lead game designer is business. Trip wasn't working with Sid to make the greatest game ever devised even better, so much as working for Carl Icahn during the Great Recession. More of a nightmare job. I read some of the quarterly statements at the time when Dale started questioning the timing of layoffs at Firaxis. Icahn needed profits to cover his promises and projections, and he needed it from Firaxis and NOW.

I have a perspective on this from my wife's experience during the Great Recession. The division she worked for in North America was their most profitable in the world. Trouble was, the parent company was desperate for cash to service the debt from building the global empire, and they at HQ were going to have to liquidate stuff on their own terms to cover their shortfalls, or be forced into bankruptcy.

Okay, fine, you think. Do them good to cut the deadwood, tighten the belt and face the recovery leaner and meaner. To that end, why not promote a guy or two from the most successful divisions, and let them run the whole shebang? Not happening. The guys at the top are playing CYA. New blood at the top would be threatening. So they tell everybody they must think outside the box and make more money.

North America comes back with - Now is the time to make those acquisitions we've been recommending for years. The market price is at a bargain!

Not happening. We need money now. In fact, we are looking to sell. But nobody wants to buy our failures. The corporations sitting on the cash we need are looking to buy our best, most profitable companies, some of your companies, obviously, and at a discount price. Make it so.

So, while that process is going on North America is getting monthly instructions to cut costs. Fewer companies mean excess overhead costs, so the execs start going after each other, to save themselves, and new rounds of layoffs at all levels every month, which caused the survivors a lot of stress and hurt their productivity. After a year of that and a lot of abuse to encourage her to quit, my wife's boss had to decide whether to cut her or find another job for himself. She got the axe.
After that they started selling off locations.

But she got called back as a consultant about two years later to check into some peculiarities. Turns out that with her gone, one of the VPs was able to perpetrate $40 million worth of fraud. Not to line his own pockets, but just to protect his job, people, and division. Turns out those accountants contribute to the bottom line, even though they don't produce anything but reports. Go figure. Yeah, her boss lost his job when the dominoes fell over that one.

SO- I think Trip was forced into using the brand and reputation to get the most advance sales and reach the largest possible market. To compromise himself and the game he loved most of his life to protect the people whom he worked with and their families during The Great Recession. I think his life must have sucked in those days like a [Sleezebag]-Clinton election.

GREAT out in the lanes, but it turned out to be a -blasphemy- popularity contest -not with the customers as it should be- and show-people all the way down to junior high spring plays are backstabbing scum, and nothing but.

I actually had similar problem to the Pond and briefly with Aeson at Poly - renfairs aren't dying of apathy or anything, but I was a standout hard worker in addition to having a gift for it, and a distressing percentage of the bullcrap I had to take was for being so noticeable because I was DOING MY JOB, which involved being LOUD, and I was the loudest -a longtime veteran, Zilch the Tory Steller,'s observation- and you can't be high-profile in a roomful of neurotic drama queens without being made sorry you showed up, unless you had an order of magnitude more people/politics skills than I did then and could make yourself well-liked by your coworkers. Lose the popularity contest, and you get constant grief for doing your job from people with less talent who don't work as hard.

Like chasing women in college, I wish I had my renfair days to do over; with what I learned since managing a chess club and all my forum life has taught me. I'd be working hard right now, but tonight I'd be counting hundreds or more in tips in very nice trailer and then maybe getting laid.

You know, you remember the problems weighed over the good times, but that was a fun, good-natured thread mostly.

But I'm now in the beginning of the end, and I've begun referring in Court Reports to "Buncle, who has posted more on-topic than you" --- which WAS TRUE, and should have stopped the "spam" harassment/slander/naked TROLLING cold on the spot. I could only say "posted at least twice as much on-topic as you" because Rhoth might be reading the post. There were mainstays of the Pond for whom 20 times as much was true. I was prolific in the AC folder, modding and otherwise - my problem was with OT trolls who troll about trolling, and I probably just gave away who for Polytubbies not already in the know.

Well, I joined the pond out of respect for Dale and Solver, not only for their wonderful IV modding work, but their patience in answering my questions at CFC. I never did more than lurk at Poly even though I was a guest and eventual alternate panelist on Dan's show. It was that villain from Mongo and the lack of activity which deterred me.

But since I keep screwball hours, you were the one usually there to interact with. Yeah, you posted a lot. But I didn't read it if I wasn't interested, same as things at CFC. I figure you just needed room to ebb and flow. Too bad you got out of synch with the other guys a couple of times. But that's the limitation of forums. We can't read body language that says- "joking", or "warning!"

You know, when someone whose style puts you off for whatever reason is frequently in conversations you find interesting, that's a problem, often a real intractable one. I get that - it's one of those annoying things in life that's no one's fault, but can be seriously vexing. I've had little to say about the football thread Gamera started last summer -there ARE threads I have nothing to add to, and I don't- but it's irritating because I read everything and don't want handegg in my universe. Reading everything was always just me, though, here and at the old place.

What I never got was people bothering to stomp into threads they don't approve of to [complaint or disagreeable woman], since they don't read everything. Dale was foremost of those people in the Warlord PC thread - turning around and also being foremost of the ones who'd complain when I missed a Court Report. Really, if that thread had been weekly Court Reports and none of the other chatter, it would have still been a WPC institution and a lot less controversial.

This is the world I have to live in.

This makes it three posts to go - I've been thinking about history so much over the weekend that I think I have to log in over there and post in WPC birthday thread in Site with some brief reflections, and ratchet up my difficulty level to four more posts...

I have a different hypothesis than Rusty's: I think Firaxis thought that Civ 4 basically did everything they wanted with their traditional design, so they looked to see if they could change things up and make a bit of a different game. I don't think there would have been much point in making a Civ V that was just a prettier Civ IV with some minor evolution.

Of course, with a new design they want to attract a new audience, but I think that's fine.

It bothers me when they dumb it down just because that's bad for it drawing Our Kind Of People - I have legitimate copies of IV and loved it for a few weeks years ago, but have never installed it on the latest machine. I rarely find any time for SMACX anymore...

I actually did upgrade machines a touch more than a year ago. I've got the previous hard drive mounted as an external, and it had a copy of the drive before that, so no modding files have been lost.

Haven't compared specs with system requirements for BE or 6, on account of not caring, but I assume a low-end machine from last year can at least run them badly.

The way things have been, it is almost like you RENT computers to use, not buy them. Paying more, you just get longer on your "rent" before the thing gets so obsolete it can do nothing but word process and play ancient games or something bad happens to it that costs more to fix than to just spend a bit more to replace and get something 4 times better.

Last 5 years, I have been through 3 cheap lower mid range Wally World laptops. I still have two of them in a closet. They did get the job done, but would strain under any game newer than 2 years old unless you put it on potato graphics settings. Forget encoding video, streaming, or doing much without the things getting hot as hell and slow as molasses. They break so darn easy. The cases are very friggin paper thin. You look at them the wrong way - screens crack, fan motor poops out, keys start not working, wifi gets stuck off, etc.

I got a new machine, now. One of those HP Omen "gaming" lappies with an I7 and a dedicated non-suck graphics card. Also picked up a Yeti mic and HD camera. The case is hard, heavy plastic and looks like it can take a lot of punishment unlike the 400 to 600 USD lappies I was accustom to. At first I was kind of put off by the lit keyboard because I felt it reeked of "l33t gamer epeen". You know, similar in vein to the neon lit cases with stobes and all that crud you see in geek techie pr0n mag/ sites like PC Gamer. But, actually, it really helps being able to see the keys when I type and do not have the main lights on. Being able to do stuff without the stutter and and great graphics settings though is kind of great. Your expectations are really brought down dealing with the slower machines. Of course, while it lasts. Until the next thing comes out and everyone develops for it. Like chasing the dragon, you never catch up and are done.

You (sometimes) get what you pay for, but something beats nothing.

I have had to make my peace with, now that hard drives have gotten big enough to not fill up in a year and be a constant problem, my machine is likely to outlive its solescence - I'm out another $500 I can't afford in four years or less, 'cause the entire innerwebs will be loading that slow.

Yeah, HD space has exploded. This thing I have has a friggin TB of space! And from my recent shopping around, that seems to be an absolute minimum unless we are talking about sub-notebooks or tablets. But then again, I could see a TB eaten up fairly quick if you deal with a lot of video.

Desktop PCs were always a bit more durable. For a while I had an old P3 running linux that did a great job as long as it was just surfing the web. I also had a gaming rig back around mid 00s that was one of the last great single cores before Nvidia did an update that changed the way GPUs behaved and brought previous high FPS games down to slow motion. I think an ex-gf ended up taking them.

But, I need the free space and portability a laptops brings. Unfortunately, I have yet to have any laptop survive to be obsolete without getting serious problems due to shoddy manufacture and/or pure bad luck.

You know what I would love?

When I worked for the VA, we had these hardened plastic war zone laptops in my room. They were made by Panasonic and were called ToughBooks. They had two battery packs and could run for like 18 to 24 hours. You could slam the thing against a wall and the screen would not crack or anything. You could spill water on them, and the keyboard would still work as long as you did not submerge the thing. They had powerful wireless cards that were strong as hell and could pick up through metal walls and stuff. Not very powerful as far as GPU/CPU. You would not be running a modern FPS at 120 FPS, but it was strong enough to do useful work without ever worrying the thing would break.

But, I have never seen these laptops offered at say, Best Buy, and if you go to Panasonic these things so expensive it would make even the wealthiest gamer who buys Alienwares get sticker shock.

Now that IS a computer. Even if Micro$oft gimped the OS on it, you could always put a Linux distro on it and still do work. Maybe not game, but a work horse nonetheless.

A bunch of Civ4 and other subs got accidentally hidden in the software change, and nobody's bothered to straighten all the forum structure screwup since. So that forum total is substantially light, and my actual 36,434 is also light by, dunno, maybe at least a couple hundred or more. I didn't actually pass my PC there when I thought I did.

I wonder, too, what counts - I probably got way over 1,000 posts in the private GotM folder, and several hundred in the three months I was in the Staff Room. Maybe nearing 50 since I stopped boycotting years ago. -All wild guesses. Does anyone else see 36,434 for me?

So roughly, yeah; I still got 10% or more of WPC posts all these years later - nine years come 6 Feb.

-Now I gotta nag Solver to untangle that forum structure problem. He OUGHT to offer the place to Mohawk Games -Soren- to pimp Old World in -- but he really cares about preserving content, even old conversations. It took me a minute to figure what this was about. I started out thinking perhaps it was a Politically Correct thread. Then maybe thought it had to do with building personal computers. Then with the numerology, I'm enough of a geek to think it was about a Program Counter. How was this site implementing a Program Counter for one's actions?
