In looking at profiles, reading your posts and gaining clues from your topics, I have to ask this question.I get the impression that I am one of the older members of this forum (if not the oldest). I am 39 years old. Heck I probably am the oldest. I am curious what the meadian age of this forum is. Please post your age. If you don't want to post your age, just say "older" or "younger" Who knows, I might have to change my user name to Grandpa WAS!

Makes me feel less uncomfortable when my wife tells me that gaming is a juvenile hobby....arghh, thinking about it makes me feel pathetic. Please tell me that others are experiencing similar feelings and generally fight the eternal wife/computer imcompatibility problem. |

I turned 29 back in September (Virgo). My wife is not all that pleased with the amount of time that I spend playing games. I presume most of us older guys has their computer referred to as "the mistress" or some similar nickname? As for kids getting in the way of playing, zaz, not yet--don't have any. As for playing getting in teh way of having kids, hmmm... haven't worried about that yet. |

Thanks, Mike! I've never really had any complaints about the timing of my birthday; I mean, people are still good to me and all--and besides, I've never known it any other way. :-)I have more sympathy for folks whose birthdays fall within the few weeks *after* Christmas, like yourself. Folks don't seem to have much money left for presents by then. :-/ (I have a brother born January 14, and I always feel like the poor guy is getting the short end of the stick.)

OmniDude, I don't feel like gaming is a juvenile hobby, but I recognise the tendency of wives to dismiss it as such. My own wife is somewhat resigned to my hobby by now. Many of the 'older' people who play games started as young people who played games. If I live to be 70, I hope I'll still have the mental agility to play and enjoy strategy games. :-)

28.Between the 7-months pregnant wife and 20 month old daughter, there is little time for gaming. It is my favorite hobby, but I have to monitor the time spent. It mostly affects my ability to play multiplayer, since I can never plan ahead for free time (just a half hour here and there). |

Or whats worse yet is when that crying baby is about 1 1/2 or 2. They are too young to be by themselves, so you sit them on your lap while you play then they want to play with the key board & mouse. They hit the Esc key or something that you did not want to do.Solution: I got an old keyboard and mouse, cut the wiring off of them( that is important if you are going to give it to infants). Now when I want to play games, I tell my son "lets work on the computer" and he gets out his keyboard and mouse, sits beside me and "works". WAS |

zaz: I'm in the same position, but my gal is just about to start crawling, so they'll have to hurry up with the release of SMAC!My wife says it's OK for me to play with the computer on times when she or our daughter don't want my company, so long as it doesn't impinge on how awake I am the day after... (Implicitly, that means I usually get to play computer games at night...) BTW: From mid-March, and 5.5 months onwards, I'm taking over staying home with our daughter. She'll be almost a year old by then (born 5 April), so she'll have stayed home with her parents for almost 1.5 years, before she goes to daycare... I'd prefer it to be 2.5 to 3 years, but I guess I shouldn't complain. |

Roland, you're probably right; I know my astronomy, but not much about astrology.I know that French and Russian use vernacular names for constellations. Does German also? English, unfortunately, has fallen into the trap of using the Greco-Roman names for the constellations. Virgo, Centaurus, Crater, Leo, Gemini, Ursa Major, etc, etc. I've always wondered why we don't call them Virgin, Centaur, Cup, Lion, Twins, Big Bear, etc., etc. O well. <sigh> |
