Just to avoid further debacles as my DotF award for the UoP [not that I'm complaining, not really...], every one please post your faction preference here.

I am definately a UoPer. In every strategy game I win with better tech. But from what I have read, the Step-daughters seem like they will have a step up in the "transcendence" way of winning the game, which would be cool. I love Vorlon sayings."The avalanche has already begun...it is too late for the peebles to vote." |

I'd probably play a custom Gaian. Start with the Gaian template, add the Diplomacy bonus, and probably remove the efficency bonus... this would make me a diplomat with a weak military and an ability to get along with the planet, plus the Gaian ability to use native units. My mortal enemies would be, of course, the Spartans, who have poor diplomacy, a strong military, and care nothing for the planet and will likely use planetbusters. Alternately, I may keep the efficiency bonus and adopt another disad... but not until I know what / if the second Gaian disad is. Size, military, diplomacy, morale, research, industry, trade, growth, efficency, information, native... whats #12? |

I will start playing each faction one time. Then I will use the custom faction option to play the canadian 8th faction. Once I will have play every faction a couple of time, I will most certainly end up creating customs with stats between the one of the peacekeepers, and the one opf the UoP. They will be called the Canadian 8th faction. But I am sure I will try hundreds of possible faction, never playing the same. |

You ask me? It's gotta be. U of P.=) Although the idea of winning a multiplayer as a religious fanatic sounds pretty funny. That's gotta make the other guys squirm. It's bad enough to lose as it is, without knowing that your people are running from a bunch of galactic door-to-door Jehova's Witnesses... (no offense to anybody of any race, religion, color, or factional preference. Religion is a very positive thing to many people. I just don't like people coming to my door to sell me anything, and that includes my eternal salvation.) ...For custom factions, Canadian or bust. Remember... we invented the zipper! For the UoP, well, we all knew that it was and will be a very popular faction, but for the PK and Gaians? Nobody had the Gaians as a first choice and only a few of us had the PKs. Strange... -Maya |

Interesting. Maya and I have the exact same faction preferences. I don't know what Maya's reasons are, but mine are pretty good:1. PK = I study social science and I am an internationalist. 2. UofP = I also have a strong interest in planetary science, the dept. where I probably spend more of my time than any other dept. My favorite author is Carl Sagan, how could I NOT want to play the UofP? 3. Gaian = Planetary Science is the closest field to recognizing the natural beauty of other planets and our own. |

In coming up with my preferences for which faction I want to play, I need to play each one and see how well it suits one of my playing styles. Some should better suit how I want to play (at the movement) than others. Some factions may be better suited for long term growth, others for drawn out combat.I would recommend that you try the different factions trying to maximize their benefits before selecting which faction you prefer. Likewise, you may find factions that you can play well, but do not like to. Those I play to avoid when I find them. |

Thomas, I think everybody knows that they'll need to try out the different factions. However, some of the advantages and disadvantages of the different factions ARE known (e.g. the Hive has good industry, Morgan has lots of cash) so people can extrapolate from their past experiences with these games to know their playing styles (I liked the Mecklars in MOO1 because of their industry, and I almost never have any cash reserves lying around when I play Civ II, so I suspect the Hive will sit better with my style than the Morgans). In addition, it's just a lot more fun to pick a faction and fight for them here on the forums.

Uop first. It is my playing style, my personality dictates it. PK later, my Civ games are like that and later a custom: Gaian, Morganite, Uop, PK combination. A benevolent, knowledge seeking, open-minded, not afraid to make a little money, atheistic, faction. It would hate all three factions whose traits it does not include. |

Gotta be The Hive first. Followed closely by Morgan conglomerate and then the Gaians. UoP? Boring! PK's? Slightly boring! Believers? Aaaah! Spartans? Verrrry boring! Actually, I'll try all the factions at some point-- but starting with those three-- Hive, Morganites, Gaians. Spartans last for sure, though, they're the most uninteresting faction of all... |

Here's something I cut and pasted from dejanews:<quote> You can create custom factions by editing the faction files (or by creating new faction files and art). It is up to you to do the "balancing" of strengths and weaknesses, however, as there is no "point system". It is possible we could add such a system in an expansion. Social Engineering -> An earlier prototype of SMAC had the social engineering system you describe, but we found this one to be more fun. Brian Reynolds Alpha Centauri Designer FIRAXIS Games <end quote> This is a bit disappointing to me, since it means that it will be almost impossible to decide whether custom factions are balanced or not. (Although getting a point system right would be outrageously complicated, so I can understand why they didn't do it). Does this affect anybody's decisions about custom factions?

Not mine - I love tinkering with systems, and faction systems are no exception. It really doesn't matter to me in the slightest what kind of method is used to allow us to construct custom factions, I would and will use them regardless. IMO the ability to create and use (and trade?) your own factions simply adds to the infinite replayability potential of the game. |
