Isn't that the probability thought experiment, where if the cat is in a box and you have no way of knowing if the cat is still alive or dead until you open the box.The Message: The Capt'n may already be dead, but Firaxis hasn't opened the box yet... |

Garland's not dead. Garland will never die. After the game has progressed far enough, Garland will wake up in the Unity and with new superhuman strength will return and seek vengance on the rebel faction traitors. A unit called "Garland" will apperar somewhere randomly who is flying, when he takes a town he destroys it, and has stats of 40/30/8, with lots of specials. |

Hail, Don't forget, there's plenty of danger left before they reach Planet. A small lander malfunction, a misreading O2 guage, there's all sorts of ways still available. Was it stated flat out that he was murdered? Or was it left vauge? I know he isn't a faction leader, so probably doesn't make it, but that doesn't make it foul play. Just think, if nothing else, the diplomatic problems the murdering faction would have with the PeaceKeepers.Wraith When you say 'the nuclear accelerator just slammed into reverse', what EXACTLY do you mean? |

It has been said that the captain is "murdered" by an unknown assailant in one or more of the previews (not Firaxis). I think it was the Gamespot, but could have been the more recent one. |

I'm thinkinh that Garland will be murdered before someone goes to check on him to see why he hasn't answered his <wake-up> call... |

They did say he will be murdered. We just have to wait and see to find out who does it... |

I think it was Santiago in the Cyrocell bay with a shredder pistol! Am I right? (I know, I know, I stole this idea off someone, but it fits in here doesn't it? After all isn't this just a guessing game anyway?)Imran Siddiqui 615 Posts! and counting |

They won't tell us, unless one of the factions has a diplomacy penalty, in which case it'll be that one. I expect it to be left as suspicion of Yang, Morgan, and Santiago, with each pointing at the other two. |

DJRR, I'd love too, but maybe during Chistmas break. I'm a tad busy now, not even able to keep up with the Iraq threads.By the way, this now gives us how we can play with fewer than 7 factions. I guess Morgan's landing pod came in at too steep an angle and got burnt to a crisp in the atmosphere, what a shame. And the fewer you play with, the more that suffer similiar fates (Yang might have come in too shallow and been bounced back into space to cruise around for eternity). |

Imran, since you have been mentioned before in the story, with CEO Morgan; I accuse you of being the murderer!Swallowing up Morgan's philosophy, plus guarantees from him to be his CFO, you blew Garland to smithereens. What you didn't know, or couldn't know, was that Morgan has found you expendable.... and will deny ever knowing you. |

I predict that the identity of Garland's killer will remain a mystery. There shouldn't be a clear cut "bad guy faction" and it's enough that Garland just dies and gets out of the way so that the faction leaders can split for good. |

To me, there are four possibilities, which I'll rank in order of probability: 1. You find Garland dead. No one knows who assassinated him, but the leaders each accuse someone else, which provokes the break of the crew in factions. They all have motive in this case, which is how they blame each other for his mysterious death. 2. The ship's situation is critical. Everyone tries to escape. Aha, but a good Captain goes down with his ship. Garland may be dumb, but he's a Hero. And he will go down with his ship, in extreme sadness because he knows the factions will kill each other. 3. There's a shoot out, and since there are tons of people, it is unclear who killed Garland. A little like 1. 4. There's an accident. He dies. Point. To me it is impossible any faction killed him at all. Even though I said (see "Opposing Factions" thread) the Spartans stand out as the ultimate evil (hated by everyone and vice-versa) the SMAC designers can't make it that obvious.

Hmmm....It would be remarkably lucky if ALL the pods made it, even if everything had gone perfectly up until that point. I think Garland's will miss. The other theory I like is the "he was murdered, and everyone accuses everyone else of doing it, causing more distrust among the factions." Of course, there are already plenty of causes for factionalizing, they really don't need anymore. Besdies of which, if they factionalize before the pods are off it will endager the mission. Paw |

This little Reynols quote makes Garlands' fate clear: There are single-square "bonus resources" spread across the map, but also major landmarks, such as Mount Planet, Garland Crater, the Monsoon Jungle, the Uranium Flats, etc, which provide a special bonus to an entire region.
