The orange tinge of the sun flooded into my cramped apartment, waking me up to another day. Slowly getting up, I hobbled over to the bathroom. I looked into the mirror and for the first time in months, realized that I was torn between two destinies. I thick, messed beard had appeared and my hair was matted. The decision would come today, it took me weeks to come to a conclusion, but I finally did. I stepped into the tub and turned on the sonic shower. Suddenly vivid memories of my past flashed into my mind. I failed them, my first and only failure on a professional mission in 12 years of tactical and strategic experience. My mistake, it was a damn rookie one too, first course at the academy. Now their all dead, in some kind of mud pit probably, the enemy, they were brutally efficient. Stepping out of the shower, clean for the first time in days, I looked into the mirror once again, realizing the impact of this decision on my life. No matter, it was either this or this crappy apartment for life. But at least here I have peace, no pressure, no commitment and no responsibilities. No, I can't let that thought enter my mind, I have to go on with this, there's no other way. I have to face mt past. The mission was easy and simple to understand. Get in, get out with the target, minimal detection, minimal hostilities. If the mission was any clearer, it would have been transparent. Our network of spies had gotten us schematics of the building, guard rotation times and most importantly, the security system access code. This mission was perhaps of the greatest importance in the duration of this war. Success meant peace and failure meant that many more corpses. We got our gear on and set out for the enemy research center. Nicoli bypassed the laser fence with some sort of blocker (never was a science freak, I was trained to be soldier). We strode in, minimal confrontation, the 2 legion class attack drones were due for maintenence, so we got to the back entrance easily. The security access code got the door open, everything was all right. The science lab was in the heart of the building, under heavy guard, but today was speical. The 5 attack drones were to be shipped back to the factory, they were in need of serious repair, but another 5 would arrive in a matter of 2-3 minutes. We checked each corner, slowly advanceing towards our prize. AS we got to the science lab, Nicoli entered the security password and got us in. Samson, Nicoli and I stayed outside the the door to cover them, in case any unwanted visitors arrived. My men rushed in and efficiently slaughtered the engineers. Then, outta no where came 5 attack drones from the inside the science lab! My men were no match for legion class attack drones, they were easily killed. Samson, Nicoli and I fled, we ran through the corridors, the exit was in sight. However, Samson was sniped down by the automated lasers that shouldn't have existed or so our spy told us. The spy was a traitor to everything that we fought for. As Nicoli and I ran out, we saw the CWAL HV Phoenix overhead, what the hell is that doin over here I thought. Nevertheless, I rushed out to our means of escape, a jet. That was that, memory has failed me here and there, but the principles were told. I then spent the next 5 months in rehabilitation and the last 3 months in self-pity. No more though, I opened my closet and took out my uniform, Lieutenant-Commander Hao of the 5th Division of CWAL.
