If you write a thread about Thief Ill write one too!!!It does take a strategy instead of shoot em up and the story is gfreat. |

Thief the Dark Project is a little hard to classify. Its an action/adventure game from a first person perspective. You play Garrett, a thief who is sent into various places, mansions, factories, prisons etc, to steal items of interest.A stranger asks you to steal a gem from a religious sect, which spins you into a web of deceit, revenge and trying to undo the evil the gem produces. The sound in the game is incredible. It acts like sound in the real world.Walk on tile and your footsteps make more noise. If you alert a guard he will look for you.If you leave a body lying around, they will get backup guards and look for you.Blood stains to.You can carry a body and hide it in a corner.Light and shadow. An indicator on the interface tells you how invisible you are.If you are in complete shadow a guard will not see you.You must use the shadows intelligently to stay stealthy. You have a sword but if you get in a fight with more than one guard your pretty much toast. You have a blackjack for knocking people out and a bow with assorted arrows ie, rope arrow for climbing, water arrow for dousing torches, noise maker arrows for distracting guards etc.It depends on stealth not on brawn and the story is good. Most immersive game I have ever played. Thers a demo at www.gamespot.com Best if have 3d accelarator and 64 megs of ram. |

I have heard about it, and it sounds cool. I'm an RPGer from way back, and while this sounds more like a hybrid RPG/FPS/Action game than an RPG, it certainly is based on RPG ideas. When I get myself me new PC, I'm gonna have a look at the demo, cos it'd be a bit lousy on my current PC. The game I am REALLY hanging for though is Baldur's Gate. That should blow everything (bar SMAC of course) away... |

I've heard about it, but the idea doesn't appeal to me. In fact, I've never owned an RPG game. I think I'll buy Diablo2, it looks wicked.Anyone else interested in Diablo2? |

Thief actually has very few RPG elements. Its more of an action/adventure game. |

Talon54: Compare thief to Half-life. Any similarities (they sounds kinda the same)?Jimbo2: YES. But I think its a long way off, just yet. BG: Please go on? Is this the new AD&D game being released? |

I got thief a week ago. It kicks ass! This is the first first-person shooter I've ever bought. I've been playing at expert, where killing someone ends the mission, because you've blown it. Diablo 2 looks like it'll be lots of fun, but its not going to be around for a long time yet. BG - I want this almost as much as I want SMAC. Truly looks to be the best TSR game since the original gold box Pools of Radiance. (now _that_ was an rpg) |

Shining1, comparing Halflife to Thief is a popular pasttime of some, but they really shouldn't be in the same class.Halflife is simply the best ever implementation of the classic Doom clone shooter. It is an excellent game, loads of fun. Thief is simply not a first person shooter. The focus couldn't be further from killing. Trying to play Thief like any other Doom clone will make you die. . .very quickly. Instead, you must strategize, think ahead, and use your tools and skills to avoid detection and accomplish your mission. It is an entirely new play experience. |

To Shining One: Halflife is more polished and linear, although not totally, and a great game I might add, but it is still a fpS with emphasis on the S If your in combat in Halflife it means your following exactly what the game is suppposed to be. If your in combat in Thief it means youve blown your cover and your fighting for your flimsy healthbar life. Thief is a whole different animal. It is more immersive because the environment and strategy are woven together.Meaning the NPCs react to sound and vision better than any game I have seen.(In what other game can you throw a vase against a wall to distract a guard out of position so you can sneak by him?)Thats using the environment!!!Also if your playing on levels where you can kill humans, you have many ways of getting to a goal.Distracting a guard, knocking him out, backstabbing him etc,so you can try different strategies on the same level. And as mentioned above as a Thief you try to avoid conflict, if you can.Its the fun of knowing you robbed the candystore right in front of their noses, sometimes literally as you hide in shadows holding your breath with a guard 3 feet away from you.And last but not least like Halflife, there is a great story involved as Garrett gets caught up in some very dicey customers that are not what they seem to be.The atmosphere in Thief is darker although I think there both pretty scary at times. They are both great games in their own right.Actually they could give you the perfect gaming balance.Fight in the light on Halflife and skulk in the dark as a Thief.

I forgot to mention that the difficulty levels in Thief have different goals and objectives and some of the mission areas are changed to make it more difficult at the higher levels, rather than just the tougher monsters less ammo scheme of a lot of games. |

The guards can hear and see a lot better on harder levels too.Now don't get me wrong, I think Half-Life looks great. But I can't afford to buy every game that looks great, (No comments from Apoc, thank-you-very-much) and Thief interested me more than Half-Life did. |

As first hand news is the best Ill give you one guys experience with Thief: > I blackjacked every mofo in the building > except 4 guards, dropping their bodies into the > back street next to the garden. One big orgy of > unconsious Hammer guards.
> On to the Cathedral Part 2... goddamned creepy, > I jumped when the upstairs neighbor flushed her > toilet. I was picking one of the side doors when > I heard a door open... or close... they close > on their own and it freaks me out. I decide I > should look around just in case that stupid zombie > tracked me down again, and just as I'm turning > (my speakers are jacked up way too far) this HUGE > ASS demonic laugh comes crashing out of my speakers > and a skeleton is bending down for a kiss. > I scream. The first time ever a game has > made me scream. Just like a woman I screamed, > one big long high pitched breathy "SHHHIIIIITTTTTTT" > > I stumble off down the hall, bumping into > the walls in panic, and the skeleton and his two > pals cut me to pieces in no time flat. > I jab at the quick load button and miss. > > I hit the quick save button instead. > "Save Successful" pops up on my > screen just as I land in a puddle of my own blood... > sigh... I'm afraid to look at my savegames to > see how far back that set me. Hmmmmmmm, think thats immersive? |
