Those of you who played Fallout and Fallout 2 will know that the members of the boarrd community were givena thanks in the manual and online credits. In Fallout it was just a general thanks to the fans who provided input via the board. For Fallout 2 there was a general thanks for all the ideas and input as well as a special thanks to some of the groups that formed on the board. Also, there were some "in jokes" in the game for people who hung out on the boards. From the screenshots at IGN, it looks like there will be at least one "in joke" with the city named Ohio (assuming it wasn't renamed from a default by the person playing). Just wondering if anyone thinks Firaxis will offer up any kind of recognition to it's patient (and in some cases, very long term) fans. A "thank you" in the manual, even more "in jokes" than just Ohio. (If they work NIM into the game somehow--in any way, I'm going to ROTFLMAO as DJ would say!) And if anyone from Firaxis reads this, yes, it will absolutely make my day if the default name for the first Gaian underwater city is "Eden Lagoon". If anyone else wants to put in blatant plugs for their own self-serving "put me in the game" bits, feel free to do so here.

You know what, I'd really like to see the Brotherhood of Sid in the game, as a random event or something. Like: "Morgan Industries explorers stumble on the headquarters of a group called the Brotherhood of Sid. Morgan Industries gains one tech advance for assimilating the BoS members into their empire, and learnig much from them." Imran Siddiqui Patriot |

It'd be interesting to find the ruins of various clubhouses around the world, original purpose and dedication unknown, but which always manage to boost the morale of the unit that finds it.

On second thoughts, it's the techonology/military descriptions that would most make sense to include names, especially the early ones. For instance:Fusion Core (tech): developed in the early twenty-first century by a research group led by noted industrialist T.A Stobie... Fanatic Rush (special ability): In the words of american Brigader-General ??? (I forget your real name, YYYH): "Once the target is acquired, speed of attack is critical. We find a full on, hellbent assault most effective in this situation." Obviously there is scope for better dialogue, but this area could make for some very funny in-jokes, without confusing the ordinary players. |

Hydroponic farms, first made to be completely self contained by a Professor D.H.Edwards, are a vital part of any thriving colony.Dna Hydrolizing Emissions, the most dangerous kind of pollution, which threatens to wipe out all life on Planet, are found in great concentration near Morgan cities. Doctrine: Humanitarian Expansion, one of a number of treatises authored by D.H.Edwards, allows for the expansion of colonies and the developement of true cities without affecting population happiness or health. |

A city called fnord would just be totally magnificently wondrously great!!! There would be like at least three different groups of people that would all think it's their joke! HA! Disinformation, conspiracies within conspiracies, jokes inside jokes, obfuscation to the third degree... Anyway, the true meaning of fnord might be glimpsed at http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~jimcclur/fnord.html (but then again, maybe not). It gives the factions a reduction in science production, due to it wasting so much time & money trying to invent experimental drugs, for non-existant diseases, meanwhile launching weird creatures to take people over!!! A PK city named Arnelos would be the best. However, perhaps some level of doctrinal or political/social science research can have the originating idea be attributed to a certain Dr. Benjamin Bush (Arnelos). I would think that such a thing along the lines of some of the original discussion from the tech forums would be apropriate (I was either the only person starting social science threads in either old tech forums or the new forums, but I may be forgetting something.). I would think one of the futuristic societies or some level of humanistic philosophy concerning inter-state relations or domestic political outcomes or societal values could have the idea attributed to me (although obviously the faction that gets the tech would be the ones who fully researched it.) |

You all have just witnessed a true rarity in the SMAC forums, a short Arnelos post.Well, on to more self-serving: Can I be Lal's good pal like Raymond is to Zakharov? I've been talking about how cool it would be for me to have a political science discussion with Pravin Lal sharing our joint commitment to humanism. We could discuss the importance of humanistic ethics in society along with the importance of careful and conciliatory diplomacy. TO NON SELF-SERVING THINGS: Name a city Ohio :-) Name an artifact or something NIM Name cities after people's posting names of that faction Name a hierarchy of names for each faction from the U.N.S. Unity crewlist along with people in the factions based upon each person's chosen faction (**NOTE**: Firaxis could just e-mail everyone to ask faction choice and then narrow down from among the choices with people's real names, obtained from the U.N.S. Unity roster or their posting profile). As I said before, but should probably clarify, the real names could be used for the occasional name-drop of an diplomat, researcher, general, politician, buerocrat, businessman, spy, common soldier or worker, etc. You could possibly ask for preference in the e-mail. THUS, YYYH could be a Spartan General up there in the command hierarchy with Coronel Santiago, Imran could be an important Morganite businessman, Brother Greg could be a PK diplomat, etc. BTW, I would want to be: Peacekeeper (of course): 1. Lal's Right Hand in the political arena (start as bureaucrat, possibly foreign secretary/diplomat with considerable political science research background :-)) Arnelos Benjamin Bush |

Firaxis, if you're reading this, here was the blatant mug for a story appearance I wrote up earlier:<Ensign Ingraham walks into the room. He is youthful and has the enthusiasm of an idealist in his face> Miriam: Ingraham, do you know why you were the only other chaplain woken up? Ingraham: No, maam. Miriam: Maam, hehe, I like that. You were woken up because I knew I could trust you. I have a little mission for you... Ingraham: Yes? Miriam: It's the weapons in the weapons storage area. There are guards to keep out the Spartans, but not us. Do you understand what I want? Ingraham: Not really... Miriam: It's very simple. This stun gun should knock those idiots unconscious while making it look like a Spartan attack. You then unlock the vault and take out a box of shredder pistols, and you will bring them to Cryogenics Cell Block C4. I will be waiting there. Any questions? Ingraham: Um... Miriam: Good. We have to hurry. Ingraham: But chaplain's aren't allowed to carry sidearms. Miriam: Sometimes working for God means having to bend the rules a little bit. Later on in the story (that I don't have dialogued out) we find out that the "stun gun" actually kills the guards, but Ingraham doesn't realize that yet. He takes them to the cell block, where he finds Miriam with a list of people she thinks will support her. When Ingraham asks how, she shows the psych profiles she "obtained" from the ship's computer. They place shredder pistols in all the specified people's lockboxes, but the seeds have been planted for Ingraham's later dramatic betrayal of Godwinson to another faction. (comments to FIRAXIS: Miriam is too peaceful and likable right now. We need to see her dark side. I wish I could have thought of a more evil mission for her to give Ensign Ingraham, but she needs to be seen as the fanatical megalomaniac we think she is in the actual game. She needs to be shown that she will endanger the mission to further HER goals, just as the Spartans endanger the mission to further their goals.) |

As fun for us as it would be, making SMAC a barrel full of inside jokes, no way that will happen. What we need to do is think of ways to put in inside jokes while making them invisible/unobtrusive to outsiders. See the 7th post on this thread, "Fusion Core (tech): developed in the early twenty-first century by a research group led by noted industrialist T.A Stobie..." etc. That's the way to do it. Lets try to think up some more like that, that someone not in the inside of the joke wouldn't think is odd; they just wouldn't know the real meaning. |

I was playing Fallout 2 last night and came across one of their "special" random encounters. It was the "Unwashed Villagers" beating up a Spammer. (For those that don't know, the UV is a bunch of the regular posters from the F2 board that formed a sort of Club.) When you clicked on the various characters, it gave the internet handles that they used: Lerk, Buffy, DoomBot, etc.Doesn't really fit for a SMAC-like game, but in the role-playing game it was kind of a nice tip'o'the hat. Maybe Firaxis could put in an Easter Egg... like typing "forum" while the credits are scrolling. Doing that would change the credits from the usual to a list of everyone that achieved Memeber status. Or something... |
