Just out of curiosity, how many people here use operating systems other than Windows? (this includes people like myself who use Windows in addition to other operating systems.)I just found out in the last few days that Maxis Games, another game company published by Electronic Arts, is developing a version of Sim City 3000 for Be Inc.'s BeOS. This suggests to me that EA is open to providing support for BeOS, and potentially other platforms too... and I know that I for one would dearly love to be able to play SMAC on the BeOS, although I'll certainly be getting it for Windows as well.

A very distinct possibility, but keep in mind the ultimate choice is EA's, not Firaxis's, and just because one division of EA supported an OS, another won't. |

I hope they either support other platforms(can you say Linux?) or help the group(s) doing windoze emulators. |

Oh I know it's EA's decision, not Firaxis', but I see it as a hopeful sign anyway... and heck, this is the place to make it known to people that it may well be a real possibility now. |

At the very least they can help out the wine people. |

If any Firaxians are reading this, I hope that you will try the following experiment before SMAC's code is finalized: Try running SMAC under Linux's Windows emulator, "Wine". If it works, great! If it doesn't, feel free to play with the source code until it does work... |

I wouldn't hold my breath for getting them to work on Wine. Much as Wine is an interesting project, I'd rather see a native write of the game for any platform they intend to support... Most of the time-consuming work *seems* to have been the actual design and playbalancing of the game, not just the programming of the game. While I don't expect a port would be the easiest thing ever done, I would hardly expect it to take the same length of time it took to finish the original version. |
