I just downloaded IE5.0 beta from Microsoft. Anyone else? If so, what'd ya think of it? Comments? I personally like it, not much of a change but some refinements are cool, like the new auto-complete box.Imran Siddiqui Patriot

I like IE 5 better than IE 4, but that isn't saying much. I'm not all that fond of 4. Netscape 4.5 is quite nice on the other hand...

While I dislike Microsoft, I must admit that their broweser (3.0.2) that I have is better than Navigator 4.5 (which I'm using right now). IE puts the source in a .txt file (much better) when viewing, and it handles cookies properly (I never had to retype my PW and SN in IE for these forums; now I have to the first time every visit to AC). But Navigator 4.5 does handle Java far better, I must admit. |

Well, Snowfire, the newer IE's IE4.01, and IE 5.0 beta have good Java, actually I have both IE5.0 beta and Netscape 4.5.Imran Siddiqui Patriot |

Netscape SHOULD handle Java better - it uses real Java, not that fake Microsoft Java that got them in such hot water just recently. It also does Javascript better, which again is not surprising - Netscape invented Javascript...

You're kidding right? You want me to install a BETA from MICROSOFT on my computer? What is that, a plan to get rid of me for the next two weeks until I annoyed one of my computer-wise friends enough to get them to come fix my computer? =) -Maya |

Does IE5 beta overwrite your IE4 files? What kind of control does it take over your system. I use IE4.01SP1, and am quite pleased with it (yes I've used Netscape 4.06, and it does nothing for me), however, I'm not too keen on installing an MS beta.

All I can say is... fear for your life when you install a MS beta. Last time I did that.. well, we won't go into that... but I've heard suck horror stories about IE5...ehh... RyanR |

Well, it actually is no more intrusive than IE 4.x, it could be less. You can uninstall it anytime, by going to the micosoft site. By the way, Microsoft betas aren't all that bad. I DL'd IE 4.0 beta on my home computer and it worked perfectly, until I installed the public release. Nothing to fear.Imran Siddiqui Patriot

You can only uninstall it online? I'm not going there!!I've got Netscape 4.5 at work and IE 4.01 I have to admit I do use IE 4 more often I hate admiting it but it seems a bit more polished, forgiving and just as quick. |

Just got it and am using it right now. So far it seems to be working okay. As said earlier, it is just a refinement of IE4. It made this page load faster, so it's okay by me.

Kyle, I think there might be a slight problem, though. Try clicking on the profile buttons, and see if anything shows up. I got frustrated that a link the opens another window doesn't open, so I uninstalled it and am using IE 4.01 now.Imran Siddiqui Patriot |

It's okay Maya, installing Microsoft beta products is no more risky than installing any other Microsoft product. There's no functional difference... as far as I can tell, all they do is remove the word 'Beta' when they release a product anyway. Just avoid the first version of a 'beta' product, and you'll be fine... (this is because they call the first version beta even though they should properly be calling it either alpha or pre-alpha.

In fact, the browser has only locked up once, and as noted earlier, loads webpages faster. |

I downloaded and installed IE 5.0 beta, and I love it. I have found it to be much, much more stable than ie 4.01 ever was on my computer, as well as faster in most cases. As for Java, oh well, I don't see it much anyway. I was running the developer preview of IE 5.0 back this summer (the first beta), and it was extremely buggy and unstable, but still a good product. The only problem I ran into with that was that when I had to uninstall it to upgrade to win98, I lost all email (outlook express and eudora), so I formatted my harddrive and started over. It was a good thing, too. I gained over 600 meg of free space on my 1.6 gig drive. |

Maybe I'll try it out. Next week though, I've got a big deadline and I don't want experimental software on it until then really. I think I would use Netscape 4.5 if you could click stop when loading a table (eg the thread list) and it would display what it had loaded. That saves a lot of time on these Forums. |
