This thread is for ideas on how to best defeat your everyday, run-of-the-mill aggressive and thoughtless Spartan. First, I would seek out the Spartans and develop a reliable spy network. Second, attack them on a major level after talking peace. I would get some of Saratov's folks to help out distance them in some types of military tech.
There are many different ways, what are some other ways:

Jeff,

This might not be as easy as it sounds. Given the amount of time that Brian Reynolds has devoted to balance game play, I think this strategy might not work as easily as you think. The Spartans may be given some inherent advantages in defense, stealth or mobility in the same way that the Believers have an early attack advantage. Both the AI and a human opponent will have these advantages.

You are right to think that Saratov will have a long lasting grudge against the Spartans and will have a predilection to ally against them.

I guess I am saying that we cannot underestimate any of the factions just because of our preconceived ideas concerning their strengths and weaknesses.

How to beat a Spartan ? Hard, harder, hardest - and don't forget to hit the parts where it really hurts...

I am sure you are right about that. Why would Brian Reynolds do that? Nevertheless, I like the idea of a direct assault on the Spartans to start the game, of course, this depends on who I play. I can see the Spartans getting placed in a long protracted war and having to reach out to make alliances. I feel that is something Santiago would not do very easily???

Wouldn't it be great to have the Spartans bumped off early in the game? You may be able to play the rest of the game without having any major battles/wars. Just a thought.

jsorense;

I meant to tell you, I really liked your episodes on the Believers. It was original with well thought out planning. You and Borodino planned well. I am looking forward to catching any new episodes you may have coming up. I miss the old threads. I was beginning to write episodes on the Hive until the page went down. Oh, well.

Roland,

I just wonder where the achilles heal would be on the Spartans???? You know they will have the technology, and they certainly have the military bearing. Um, maybe in superior numbers of attacks???

What do you think??

Technology ? Not so sure about that.

They will use a lot of resources on their military. So they can spend less on research and improvement/expansion. If you meet them early, they may kill you. If you can outgrow and outsmart them, they will be crushed.

I see. So a quick and strong development early would stand a better chance for a war later. I am afraid by waiting they will just grow stronger. Maybe with the right alliances and focus a later war would work. Um, not to sure.

You have a point, early war with those fanatics would probably be useless. They hit the planet ready for war. Everyone else is just trying to get there coordinates straight, if you know what I mean. Plus, they have that "fanatic" edge to them. I find that the fanatic mentality sometimes wins in the most intense and stressful situations.

You are so right! Just that the Spartans have no idea what fanaticism really is! We know! We live it!

Jeff,

Thanks for your kind comments on my take of the Believers. I wasn't sure anyone read them besides Borodino. I am sure we will continue in the AFC style when the real forum comes back up and Borodino catches up on his calculus.

Adios

Hey hey hey St.Rederwolf, check out the RCFH when the old forums come back and you'll see all the havoc I can wreack on the Believers. I've nothing personal against the Spartans; after done crushing the Hive, the Beliveres have better been nice to me because otherwise they are next on "The List."

Then I guess you'll have to be the first to go

Perhaps we could go hunting botanist one day...

Really, none of the leaders or fractions annoy me, but the tree huggers that put people out of jobs and put spikes in trees so that the loggers' will hurt themselves when there're only doing there jobs. That makes me apathetic to the gaians

Economic warfare: that is how you defeat the Spartans. In the Gamespot preview, he says that the Spartan war machine will cost a lot. So in the long run, economic sanctions should collapse the Spartan economy. If you can survive the original onslaught, then in a prolonged war the Spartans will lose because they cannot maintain the war machine. Morgan will not have this problem: he'll have the rssources to fight almost forever.

We may have to finance our armies in a conquerer's economy always conquering to finance more war. If you can slow us down...

The war nourishes (word ? spelling ?) the war. But if the Spartans fail to do that, if they meet a tough opposition, they will lose a long war.

If they are on a roll, it's like a snowball. So I'd guess spartan games will ahve a strong element of gamble in them.

Yes you are right, it's tough being a Spartan.

It's that sense of risk, of danger that keeps us Spartans sustained.

I'm never gonna allow us into a prolonged war, no matter what the risks. The bad thing is, I won't be able to use atrocities, until the planetary council repeals that UN charter. I can't have my trade decreased because I dropped some nerve gas on a few HHers

Trade? I think you should be more worried about all the other factions ganging up on you.

If you lose trade you can just take what you want. Of course the perfect Spartan strategy is to trick someone else into attacking for you.
