For all those vets out there, have you noticed that really the only people that have gotten a lot of recognition in these forums (with the with pretty much the only exceptions of TAS and Brother Greg) were big time a-holes when they first came? I won't name any names right now because I don't feel like getting flamed.

Ah, Apoc, we old vets know who the real contributors are. Not these johnny-come-lately flash-in-the-pan, 1000 posts in a three day period without really saying anything at all, get angry at the first sign of somebody disagreeing with them people (no offence intended to anyone).

Still, don't let it get you down. Just the nature of the beast. I appreciate you. =)

Still, from what I see, there's only a handful of people that are recognised and well ragarded, anyway. Probably less than that actually.

And sometimes I wonder how I ever made it to that stage. Yet, even I have people who dislike me (remember Eric Olsen from the old forums?). And the recognition doesn't really do that much anyway. It's nice sometimes, and the NIM thing is fun (tho it is getting a little long in the tooth), but I don't post for the sake of attracting attention.

Ah, there's also that many people these days that I can't keep track of them all, let alone where they came from.

Brother Greg,
Of the order of those that couldn't be bothered cutting and pasting their title right now. =)

hmmm .. I know I'm not a pure Vet of the 1st generation, but I no rookie either .. hope you weren't refering to me either !!!

As for vets who do get recognition, I haven't really met any I would classify as an A-Hole !!!

Good point Apoc. You could say, I as a late 1st generation vet was a bit of an a-hole. In the CoFH, I killed Morgan. Of course, I only posted in the CoFH for a while. So the GC were spared my wrath. I didn't want to come off that way, but maybe it was because of the need for attention to be diverted from the established norms. What'd you guys think?

No, I;m not 1st gen either, but I remember that when I came I was very careful not to piss anyone off. When I settled in a bit more I sometimes caught myself posting less that faverouble messages. Even now I have to remind my self sometimes not to be a dickhead.

By the way I love that title for this thread. I've got to use that somewhere.

When I first came here I tried not to piss anyone off, but in my trying, I pissed even more people off. I just fail at everything. Life, relationships, war, CivII, all of 'em I've failed at. Perhaps I should move to CA & start a new life assisting outlyr in his illegal operations to support SMACA.

But now, my messages are pretty carefree, I don't monitor what I write too much, & really don't care who I offend, well unless they post they're offended. (Admit it, you all mumbled swears about me to yourselves at one point or another!!)

Pretty much the same way here. Basically, the only posts I give thought to are my ones defending religion, and trying to dissuade the masses of atheists on these forums. err, this forum.

I guess I am a late 2nd generation poster. I started post-CoFH. I tried to post good topics that I really cared to discuss but I got 0 relpies in 5 posts. But I could get 20 replies in off-topic GC posts. Now I'm just here for the fun of it all, SMAC or no SMAC.

YYYH, If you come out here be sure to hit So Cal No Cal if full of freaks. You will hang in the winter seeinf all of us complain about the "cold" while wearing coats in 50 degree(F) weather. You will get a good laugh but if you stay, you too will find your self saying things like, "I was freezing last night it must have hit 40".

I intended on going to So. Cal. My cousin & her fiance recently moved out there, so I'd be close to family. Then I can laugh at you for complaining about the 'low' temps over there. It's 30 something outside here right now, my cousin told me in an email that it's still about 70 during the day!!

I don't intend on staying either, I love it here in New England, we have a little bit of everything. Winter, summer, spring, polluted lakes that close down every three days due to E-Coli contamination, a dwindling oyster population that used to be a main source of our commerce, the history of the area, we were there before the USA was the USA, the ability to remember pretty much all the small towns in the state, having the Insurance capital of the world, the robins returning here every spring, being in the nutmeg state, knowing no major battle has ever been fought on CT's land(There have been towns burned though, stupid Benedict Arnold!), the NY Yankees are nearby, the Red Sox are nearby, so we can go boo them! We've got countryside about 20-30 miles away from NY City, we despise the high gas prices, we vote Democrat mostly, even though our governor is Republican, we don't worry about earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes as much as you fools, we worry about blizzards, my town has the infamous 'shoe box murder' in which they found a mans torso(& nothing else) inside a large crate, it was never solved. Where was I?? Damn I forgot, oh well.

lol .. YYYH .. .I never thought of you as an A-hole !!!

DHE .. I wouldn't worry too much about offending people in the religious debates we've had .. just by participating, everyone on every side of the issue seams to understand that people have opposing viewpoints, and we can only grow from knowing what our neighbors (on a global scale) think !!! I found alot of the arguments completely absurd and without foundation, but that's what made them opposing arguments .. to have a debate is to present 2 opposing arguments for one issue !!! Anyone who doesn't understand that (no-one here so far to date) shouldn't be in any forum of any kind !!!

I started, reallllllly slowly, back in mid-July, so I am technically late 1st generation. I used to avoid GC like the plauge because I had a slow connection and hadn't figured out the "go to the site, set the search on posts in the last day, and THEN go to GC" trick, so I was a lurker who made some on-topic posts. Then I started getting into the RCFH and the I clubs, but I remained mostly an on-topic poster and in fact did not rack up that high a post count- a mere 150-200 I think at the end of August. I certainly hope you don't think of me as an A-hole, I've paid my dues in the on-topic section and not been THAT offensive (except to conservatives for the crime of telling the horrible truth about them... um, never mind, we'll talk about that later. )

You consider mid-July first Generation?

I consider first generation being everyone who posted before "Amen Brother Greg" or atleast before the start of the "SMAC Addiction" threads.

Late First Generation, yet. I consider the First Generation to have ended with the CoFH. I remember, while lurking, tons of names that never came up again but were spoken of in reverential tones later.

CoFH were still going until almost August though...I really don't see how you can consider that 1st generation when so much happened before that.

Okay, we need some definitians.

I considere 1st Gen as the guys who where here during the OLD forums (at firaxis.com is think it was). Now 2nd Gen is between start of the alphacentauri.com to about August (when I came). 3rd gen is late August, September to the crash of the forums, where Amen Brother Greg, The I Club(s), Ohio ect. was well in place and on-the-topic posting was slowly dieing. I was the time of beta testing and many a preview. Then there's 4th gen. these guys, the Origin server newbies.

Any one got anything to add?

Joined in early July on the then almost brand new alphacentauri.com forums (I remember when it was possible to get on and not have 300-500 more messages here after one day. . .oh, those were the times).

So I guess I would be early second generation by Mortis' classification system.

SnowFire posted 11-14-98 09:22 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for SnowFire  Click Here to Email SnowFire
To use Mortis's generation, I appeared as a lurker in the 2nd generation, and only really became super addicted in the 3rd generation.

Using the Mortis Standard: I lurked in the 1st gen, for about an hour. Then I got an Internet connection in July(2nd gen), lurked for 2-3 days, then I posted after I got the hang of everything, & all the inside jokes.

So I've been here from 2nd gen.-4th gen. I can't wait 'till the 5th gen!!

I posted quite a bit in the old forum on the Firaxis web-site. This site opened on June 1st so I guess I must have first posted on the old forum around April. I dunno what generation that is. Only other persons name that I can remember from back then is Brother Greg(tho there was no Brother bit to his name then). Since the Director-Generals early Labyrinth posts I have posted nothing at all until today.

Well, but who defines and judges "quality" ?
BigER posted 11-16-98 11:28 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for BigER  Click Here to Email BigER
I think Mike and Roland have good points here.
First don't rag on someone if they bring up a topic that has been covered before(it's new to them and they may have something to say we didn't think of.)
And two- if you don't like what someone is posting (like anything off the SMAC topic for instance) then don't respond to it.
Quality information to me may be so much baby vomit to someone else.

I see a certain amount of arrogonce sometimes with people who have been posting for awhile (I am counting myself here-so no flame throwers please.)

So, maybe the key to happy threads is THINK before you post. And if you offend (intentional or not) then apologize. It's not that hard. Here let me start.

I apologize for NYM, pies, off topic posts, Guns, short attention span and bad jokes. If I left anything out let me know I will apologize for those to.

You see, my goal here is to have fun, relieve stress at work, and talk to other people with similar interests. Is that so hard?
