Here's the scenario. We recently started a PBEM game and one of our players dropped off of the face of the Earth. Unfortunately, he set a password as well so we can't change it to a computer player without the password.

Any suggestions (other than start over)?

Dontcha just hate it when that happens?

Makes a good case for a Master Password for multiplayer games that the host can set to enable an override if someone drops.

I've run into the same thing and I don't think there is a thing that can be done.

Unfortunate and it sucks.

We have a simular problem but our player did NOT set a password. How can we have the computer take over for the wayward player?

I have not tried this, so I don't know for sure, but when you CTRL-Q in the middle of the turn, the computer asks you if you want to "wimp out" of the MP game, then pops up a save dialog.

Try this: save the game at that point, then reload it, and try to play one turn.

I'll check my theory tonight... (After I've played my own turns in micje's and Goob's challenges of course I'm not -ever- going to drop out of these !)

I just have something to tell to avoid those kind of troubles.

If you start a PBEM with 7 players, just ask them to choose a password with 6 letters. Each player must give a letter from his password to each player (it must be a condition for th game), in the correct order following the turn order. If one of the players quit the game, the oters would be able to built the password (for 6 players a password of 5 letters)

I hereby nominate Sashka for a spot on this forum's Monument.

Excellent suggestion!

If only we'd thought of this when we started...

Nick.

Bynary, could you send me a zip of the game? I would like to try and "crack" it. Don,t know how, but would like to try a few things. if you don't mind. [email protected]

Ok, I sent cousLee the game file to see if it was "crackable". As far as the rest goes, I agree with Dr Nick! Sashka's suggestion was the best I have heard and will definately be implemented in all my future games...

Nice one, Sashka!

A hex disk editor would let you see the "password" data. That HAS to be saved to disk. It may or may NOT be encrypted. Depends on the trouble the Firaxian coders went to...

Sashinka = Sashka

I have to thank you all to agree with that solution. I wanted to put light on it, just imagine the destiny of the game, if we consider that you get this sugestion for your PBEM. So, what will happend ? You can give the faction to an other player (which is the simple way), but there is a diplomatic solution. Imagine that, using the council, you'll be able to share the cities of the player who dropped of...

sigh,,
First, I try to help out by offering to try a few things to fix Bynary's game. I get sent a game from 2102 (2 turns from planet fall). though losing a player in round 2 is no great loss, they could just start anew, without much loss. It did biring up interesting questions. the 2102.sav has been worked on. I requested the other players password to be able to test a few things, but have received no reply. Bynary's emaill address keep comming back invalid. Thats ok, I have an idea, but i can not check it out currently. So I requested a PBEM/hotseat game, with the first 2 rounds played, and passwords set, from anyone else. I can not test this by creating the game and passwords on this computer.

So I will ask again, will someone please send my a 3 player hotseat .sav, with the 3 passwords they chose?
