I'm new so is it common practice for players to meet in a chat room to practice diplomacy outside that allowed by SMAC? It's easy to imagine scnarios where this would be useful

Darksider,

I don't know if it is common, but I do it frequently. Have a care to avoid violating the No Early Diplomacy settting, if in place.

Problem with this is that there is little in the way of documentation later, should one party say to the other.." You said you would..." ( Please don't ask how I know this.

Also, it can be very much fun to conduct your diplomacy by email and 'in character'.
This method is rather time consuming sometimes. There are also occasions when you just can't say what needs saying and remain in character, such as "Why are you prototyping impact weapons on rovers when you need them ASAP to stop X from crushing you?" Again, don't ask.

My main beef is not having a map to look at when discussing strategy. Add this lack to the fact that there is little 'feel' for the geography on any map, except perhaps the Map of Planet, and some quite interesting misunderstandings develop. For the third time, don't ask.

Have fun, young Metternich! (did I spell that right?)
