Aw. You poor bastards. Not, not you IP players... just you poor sods getting reamed with crunchy peanut butter that are playing PBEM. Its so buggy, I'm stopping. Yep. From a total clean boot and starting ONLY SMAC PBEM, SMAC, that supreme pile of steaming **** that it is, hoses many base system services. Why? Cause the programmers at Firaxis couldn't care LESS about making it work right. It was just a freaking quick cludge anyway. Heck, Multiplayer was an afterthought in beta, so I don't know why I should be surprised the PBEM is doing well to even be able to display.

What then drives me nuts is that when you go and REPORT this stinking pile of manure's improper behavior, something that Firaxis's wondrous Q&A "tested", they tell you its your system. Hey, if they had coded it with just one more piece of straw covered ****, PBEM would completely crash everyone's system that try it.

And these guys are the ones building not one, but 2! more TBS games... CivIII (Another Brian Reynolds designed and led piece of... ) and Sid's Mysterious Game Number three, which takes place after SMAC. Well, if Brian and his people are of screwing up and pulling code out of their ass, then maybe Sid's will run. Who knows? Only time will tell...

But you poor sods that have to suffer PBEM, you have my sympathies. Have you considered forming a local SMAC club so that you can IP SMAC instead?

I have not given up yet. I chose to be naive and believe that I am using product which is currently evolving .
I am thinking about settig up a rebel SMAC page which bring all of us serious SMAC players together in effort to put pressure on Firaxis.

I have to apologize to all of you angry disatified types. I have had no system troubles with PBEM, (unless of course it is what caused the trouble with my CPU fan ).

I will whine a little about the Scenario Editor, but that is nothing new.

Darkstar, I am the one who feels sorry for you, and that despite your efforts you are not able to find a way to consistenly enjoy SMAC.

If I could give you my 166 Packard Bell that has run SMAC very well I would, but SMAC does not run well on my Etch-n-Sketch.

Darkstar,

I'm having a hard time following you around with the pooper scooper. If you could, please leave your droppings in a central location, so that I can respond to them more easily.

Oh, BTW, it is your computer. Has to be, as it runs fine on mine. When are you going to come to California and learn how to play (and enjoy) SMAC?

Jam - LOL! Thanks. That was helpful.

Goob - I must suspect your system must suck so bad you don't know the difference between working and hosed, or that you reboot your system on a regular basis. I bet you even turn it off when you are done! Wait... you said Packard Bell. That explains it all. You have my sympathies.

I hope SMACX has a few patches in it that actually work as advertised. Now, that would be a surprise. Firaxis obviously has too many programmers that used to work for M$. We won't get it right until somewhere between 3 and 23 tries...

Darkstar,

Don't you ever sleep? At least I have an excuse, okay two excuses; my job doesn't require much brainpower and I'm a couple (three?) hours behind you.

Actually seeing as my power supply just went totally south, I agree with Darkstar that it must be SMAC's fault. There has to be some piece of code that destroys power supplies.

Darkstar, I have run 6 PBEM games back to back with no problems, other than the fact that it is PB and it does suck. At least I am still having a blast playing SMAC, my condolences to you...

Goob, you are just a glutton for punishment. Yeah, SMAC must be frying your power supplies. It has a piece of code that says "If player = 'Goobmeister' then gosub Burn_Up_Power_Supply" . Seriously, what kind of power filtration do you have on your system? I here that serious power spikes and drop offs can kill the power supply, but I have only seen the fuses destroyed by such. But I do recall having to replace the power supply once every three or so years in the ever surviving beast that I used before my new system.

To cut the costs, most power supplies are made ultra dirt cheap, with a design life of only about two years in average duty. There are industrial grade ones for mission critical platforms that cost 5-20 times what the normal ones cost. The 20 times higher ones are dual switchovers, so that if one dies, the other automatically takes the load.

MtG,

Let me guess, with your rig, you've got five of those industrial models wired, in series, with a mean TTF of 63.8 years. Right?

Sorry Mike, it's just the green-eyed monster speaking!

Power Supply replaced, CPU Fan replaced, PC worked for next twelve hours and then decided to shut itself down and now won't restart. Oh am I just tickled pink...
