Is anyone else going to post on the CPUB besides me?

I'd be willing to post if I could figure out what the hell was going on. What time is it? What year is it? Who else is going to post? Which characters can I interact with? Who has a secret plan that's going to take weeks to develop (yet the posts somehow never seem to get posted...)? Who's running which faction? etc., etc., etc.

Time:16 years after landing Who is going to post:??????and you hopefully Interact with any established charicter after establishing you own Latest situation: A Gaien exploritory team was dispated to explore one of Chiron's continents, which they do not know is already inhabited by the UoP and Morganites. The UoP Discovers the Gaien fleet just prior to their landing and mistakenly belives that it is an armed Morgan merchent marine fleet. In other words, the Gaiens,UoP,and Morgans are about to make contact(I plan to inform Morgan that the UoP is mistaken to belive that they have violated thier territory). So heres the jist. Contact is imminent, and I need a few UoP and a couple of Gaien posters to pull this off. Anyway, it shoulden't take more than a couple of days, and I'm Going to let the Gaien posters decide whether first contact is hostile or not. The UoP has already sent out a lightly armed scout patrol to investigate, they do not know it is a landing party, they belive them to be ether Morganites or Mindworms(an Isle of the Deep was spotted traveling with the Gaien skimships)Thier reaction will be peacful, but it is up to everone if the Gaiens will be or not. |

At Squid's insistance, we presumably adopted the Map of Planet, with the Hive near Mount Planet. I have not really taken a good look at the map (and frankly, I don't think the map adds a lot to the story, but Squid seemed dead set on something) so I have no idea where anybody else is, or who is close by. By Squid's analysis, the Hive and the Gaians are not close enough to engage in any type of (even exceedingly limited) trade. I think that 16 years after planetfall is a particularly bad time for the chronicles, since virtually no real interesting interactions can occur.I'd like to begin some interesting covert operations or counter-spy operations or brainwashing and double-agents, or anything else cool. I don't want to sit around typing in about how person X ran factory Y without incident on day Z, and person A was attacked by mindworm B while investigating monolith C. That's BORING! (At least to me). I originally liked the CPUB because the characters interacted. That seems to have fallen apart. It started at planetfall, and it went downhill, because things got completely confused and disorganized.

Since the CPUB has fast-forwarded 16 years, I'd like to take a shot at writing a story about a teenager in the lower ranks of Spartan military. This is something that focuses more on the society rather than the politics (which is something that CPUB seems to concentrate on).So would any of you mind me joining in? |

I certainly don't mind anybody joining, but I'd like to move the story to at least planetfall + 40 years, if not farther in the future. |

Alright, to satify everone, howabout abondoning the CPUB and starting a new chronicle that starts off in 2135 after BRIEFLY explaning the events of the first years in a single chronicle, and to spice up the otherwise boring first chronical of the first years, throw in a few disasters. Or if you REALLY want to dive right in with no explanations, then at least include a few referances to the events before the chronical startup. Oh yeah, remember that faction leaders DO have limited lifespans, even though we assume that medical tech advances so that leaders like Zakharov, who would be 121 are still alive and live maybe to 140-160( an actual estimate made by some doctors for the current up and coming generation!)So there will be sucsessors. Also I agree with Sqiud that we need that we need a semi standard map of planet. I propose that we use the one from the old gallary of the Labryinth-UoP war which can be found at in the pics at the Alpha Centuari zone ( http://www.juhu.de/hartel/alpha/Pics.htm )Its near the bottom of the list. |

BKK: First, we know that they discover a variety of rejuventation techniques that allow the faction leaders (and presumably others) to live for hundreds of year:##The Longevity Vaccine #PROJECT14 I plan to live forever, of course, but barring that I'd settle for a couple thousand years. Even five hundred would be pretty nice. ^ ^ -- CEO Nwabudike Morgan, ^ MorganLink 3DVision Interview Second, unless SnowFire and MikeH and the others have no desire to revive the CPUB, I'm not too eager to start a new chronicle (although I might be game, I'm not sure yet).

Okay, online vote. Majority rules. Should we just scrap the CPUB and start another CoFH type Chronical beggining after 25-40 years after planetfall? |

My vote is YES, the CPUB had a good foundation, but it started off wrong. If we move the starting date up, things could get interesting. I'm waiting for your vote. |

I abstain. If the CPUB continues, I will probably stay with it. If a new chronicle starts, I may or may not join it.

The CPUB is pretty much dead as it is, no one knows what is really going on, and no one is posting. We need to try one more time to get a good entertaining chronical that has the "feel" of the originals. The CPUB pretty much did that, but the timing is off, and that killed it. If we try again, we might get it right, and that is something that no other chronical has been able to do recently. Of course, if the CPUB goes down now, without another try, or a new one does'nt replace it, there probobly won't be another. |

I never read the original chronicles, but I got the impression they focused more on big events (wars, etc.) than on small things, like characters interacting (which the CPUB had). I liked the CPUB because we seemed to have collected a group of writers who could consitently put out things of reasonable quality. Things fell apart for logistical reasons. If the writers have left, and won't be coming back, it's over, and we need to accept that.I really have nothing much against a new chronicle, but I don't think it will attract new writers. For one, we won't be able to siphon off any AFCers, and for another, the people who left the CPUB probably won't be coming back. The CPUB is completely fixable in its present state. If we wanted to, we could just declare all the stuff that "happened" after planetfall to be non-canon and start over, or we could just move on from where we are. If it ever gets back on track, I'm planning to have my character (Zale) get out of his high-level administrative position, and get into a more low-level job where he can actually do something. Unfortunately, there is a disturbing trend to keep escalating things up the chain (e.g. Squid's Gaian-Hive first contact was a little crazy, since he wanted the first diplomatic meeting between the two factions to be head-of-state to head-of-state, which usually does not happen in the real world).

2yes/1abstain Octopus, the CoFH HAD charitar interaction, but at the same time had wars, ect. Also, Im trying to attract new writers with a thread in the non-smac forum.I suggest reading the CoFH(at least episodes1-7)as a giude on how to do a successful chronical. You can still find them a the SMAC Factions base at http://home.earthlink.net/~outlyr/factions/base.html

BKK, I don't know why you're dead set against the CPUB. I had every intention of continuing it, but I've had no time at all recently. Also, you claim that there are two yes votes and one abstain. Call me crazy, but I count one yes and one abstain. And add one no, from me. Also, the CPUB started out wrong...? The Club of the Future was a big success, and the CPUB only copied its style. Maybe you like wars a lot, but I prefer subtle, covert manuervering and character interaction. In any case, if you want to start a new chronicle, feel free. But I'm not declaring the CPUB dead just yet: I'm going to put a recap of the CPUB's history in the next issue of the Mindworm, as well as a request for others to join. It had 843 hits in its first 15 days of existence, and if only 1% respond, that's 8 people, plenty to do a chronicle with. By then, I hope to have this whole thing straigthened out. But first, I agree with Octopus, I'm confused about times. We need to decide a time. It's my personal opinion that 15 years in the future is not enough time. 80 years will be cool, IMHO. But let's not turn it into the AFC where each faction gives the location of each base, what techs they've discovered, blah blah. We'll put conquered bases and such in as the story needs them. In any case, that's strictly my idea. If I get the time (which won't be tonight, hopefully tommorow), I'll email everyone who's contributed before and still shows inteerest on this topic. P.S. No offense, but you've done it before: "Beginning" is spelled beginning. |

The reason I want to start over is that the CPUB is TOO Gaien oriented, it doesn;t hardly give other factions room to exist. I like your first posts about the mindworm and monolith, but let other post in with you. I we do start over. I would like too repost the original CPUB(picking up at planetfall where Firaxis left off) up to your posts about the Gaien, and other factions early days, then jumping into the future. It is imparitive that we start soon, before intersest in this site decreases. In other words, if it's going to be done, I would say to start by the end of the week. |

BKK: Feel free to start your own chronicle. However, my intended posts which are still under construction have nothing to do with the Gaians but with the Morgans, Spartans, and Believers instead. I have a whole little thing I'm trying to work out. |
