Here's my take on the Nautilus Pirates, revealed on the Alien Crossfire site today. -1 growth -1 Efficiency +1 mineral in Ocean squares Free Naval Yards "boarding ability"-capture defeated ships Doc: Mobility Doc: Flexibility No SE restrictions I couldn't tell if there were any SE bonuses from the text, but as is, the Pirates are THE naval kings, as they were designed to be. When playing the Pirates, I would take to the sea as early as possible, and show any other faction who decides to show there face in the water the error of their ways. Their bases should be able to grow quickly in spite of the growth penalty, and extra minerals from water will help build your massive navy. I think the Pirates could go for Diplomatic or Economic victories easily.

The Pirates are coming The Pirates are comingI like the idea of conquering defeated ships, kind of like probe team capturing enemy units, i wonder if it's a probability or automatic. It may make them too powerful otherwise. Just build up a strong fleet outside an enemies base and when they build a ship attack until it's yours, now you're even stronger to do it next time.... I couldn't tell if ship capture was automatic or not, but since it described it as automatically giving the Pirate naval units the "Marine Detachment" special ability. So I guess other people can build ships that can do this as well. |

I wonder if they start with a sea base? Also, I wonder if sea borders will be beefed up a bit. As is, the AI never cares if you go through their water. |

I'd make them start with a sea base. They have the appropriate technology for it. The AI does occasionally yell at me for having ships in its waters, but not often. I'm betting that these guys will respond more decisively. BTW, did anyone notice that the profile for Captain Ulrik Svensgaard said he had a useless eye? Arr, where's me eyepatch? And he's American, too. What kind of name is Ulrik Svensgaard for an American?? |

Keep in mind that all americans (except the natives) came from somewhere else. Why not Ulrik Svensgaard? My last name is "de Vet" (dutch), and I'm canadian. -- As for the sea base, I think it's a safe bet. Look at the landscape on the bio screen... |

The Pirates look y kick ass. I think Conquer victory might be an option for them. For the Svensgaard is not American thing his ancestors could of been Swedish or Danish. Maybe even Finnish. Capturing ships might optional, after all can't Pirates be choosy ? Tally Ho, Lord Beselwick |

Well, I'm not saying that any name is unrealistic for an American. Having a bastardized German-Polish surname myself, I know that there are weird names out there. I just wasn't expecting to read that someone named "Ulrik" was born in Massachutsetts. Especially spelled with a "k." |

In Seattle, Scandinavian names are quite common. But in the Pacific Northwest, Ulrik's name would more likely be spelled "Svendgard". |
