Because of the way I've always played Civ & Civ2 (Research, Research, Research) I seem to have difficulty playing any faction other than University.

I always want all the technology and all the Special Projects..

I've recently tried playing all the other factions to get a feel for them, but am finding it difficult.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get me out of my University rut...

LeslieT,

I know EXACTLY how you feel. Ive had SMAC for almost 3 months and, until recently, I only played Gaians. I found the other factions a little alien, and kind of feared leaving my lovely Deirdre. But I did. How, you ask? I chose another faction that was kind of close to the Gaians philosophy to reduce the trauma (PKs). I plan on playing the PKs for a while (I am not playing much right now Im too busy writing SMAC fiction!! hehe), then move on to the UoP. The bloodthirsty factions will be a challenge, but eventually I will make the psychological transition.

Overall, I have found that playing the PKs makes me more appreciative of my first love, the Gaians. I expect the same will be true with other factions.

Hang in there!!

P.S. The Gaians are pretty good at research due to their high efficiency, particularly with larger and far flung empires (which is how I play). Plus, frolicking in the fungus with mindworms is so much fun!

Leslie T-

I sympathize with your predicament, but I am a real advocate of playing all the faction leaders at least once. I have my preferences too, like lots of folks on this web site. I found that the best thing to move past those prefferences was play acting with the other faction leaders. Get into character with these folks. Play Miriam when your irritable and cranky. Play Yang when your sympathy for human life is less than usual. Play Morgan when your feeling greedy, you get the idea.

There is no better way to learn how to beat the other factions than to know them from the inside. The only good way to do that is to play them. It also makes you a much better game player in general when you have to compensate at different times for different sets of weaknesses.

Lal and Diedre are a lot of fun, without a doubt, and their good folk. But, in an essentially conquest oriented game (which ever form of conquest you employ) it can also be fun to play a more natively agressive faction. It's hardly an endorsement of a factions world view to enjoy playing that faction. I find Miriam morally repugnant but I've had a LOT of fun playing her. Besides, sometimes it's fun to be a bitch .

Ah..
That is exactly what I am doing... I am imposing my views (research, expand, grow, research) on Yang, Diedre, etc...

I need to learn how to play them... for them.

I think I'll go try & take over the world as Yang.. I'll let you know how it goes!
