i have been able to do ok with them, you must go for planetary networks or ethical calculus so you can get your population to grow by either swithing to planned or democracy or by building a childrens crech...however the computer is horrible with them, it keep on building a colony pod even though their population isn't going to grow...on accelerated start it did ok...any thought on how to make it better with them? |

and i gave them fanatic attack bonus...the best strategy is to make the people around you surrender earlier on and use them for tech money and connon fodder... |

That -4 growth must be a killer early on when trying to expand. It takes a while to get to democracy and those creches, so this is a tough faction to play, but getting past the initial stages it turns into a major power with an unmatched industry and an easy +2 economy with wealth. |

i won on transend with them the other day after i added the fanatic bounus...i'm thinking about makeing their growth negative 5 or six...and maybe giving them a negative one planetbut i know that mind worms eliminated me the first gam out of three i tried with them... |

I don't know if the fanatic attack bonus is fair-- I think just having applied physics and mobility from the start is enough as far as initial military goes! Probably a good idea to just go in and take over any factions around you right away-- with those laser speeders it should be easy... too easy. I think maybe they should lose the lasers as a starting tech-- I think the makers of SMAC gave that tech to nobody for a reason. |

without the fanatic bounus the game was really hard with it it was a little easy...oh yeah and i put a pop limit of five on the cities |

Also, they don't get +2 support, right? That would be too much. I think the best way to balance them would be:+1 economy +1 industry -4 growth Free recycle tanks Start with either doctrine mobility or even applied physics but not both. Like I said, the -4 growth can be helped with just democracy, creches, and planned, to give you +2. The only real drawback here is that you obviously can't get to the magic +6 but eventually the vats will come along and you will be really powerful.

so i guess i'll take their growth down to -5 so that they have to use two methods to start growing...either planned/dem dem/creches or planned/creches and with a cap of 5 on their ities that should even out all of their advantages |

You gave them a pop cap for both hab complexes and domes? So what does that give you-- a max of 12 for domes also? Yeah, that is a major detriment, and would justify some more advantages to what I just suggested. |

no they don't get +2 support i modified the university file and the +2 support is in it but it doesn't actually do anything...and with zero population growth (-3 growth) your cities don't increase from size one until you increase your growth rating... |

But still I don't think the +2 support (if they do in fact get it) should be allowed. The fanatic attack bonus is a significant advantage in itself. |

yeah they have cities max size five without hab complexes and with them max size 12 (unless you get the aestetic virtue) |

Wow-- didn't realize that growth bottomed out at -3 like that (to give you zero growth). I would go nuts if I saw lots of free land around me at the beginning and nothing to do with it-- your initial research will be awful so it will be really tough to even get to ethical calculus. |

I'm starting to think that both techs are in fact justified-- you need to attack and defend your land so it will still be there when you can finally use it! |

the basic story with these guys are a militaristic united states of the future takes over earth (hense the impunity to wealth), it knows that the UN sent out a colonization team to alpha centauri...so they assemble a small army and send them to conquer the colonist...however it takes 40 years for reinforcements to arrive and the expense of traveling from earth to alph centauri is so great that they can't even maintain the 40 year reinforcement policy...however the soldiers ship was not damage and they didn't lose all of their knowledge becuase of a malfunction (hense the mobility and appiled physics)... |

Cool idea. I don't have much of a story for my faction yet-- other than that they are genetically enhanced individuals striving for transcendence. I may even get around to actually putting them into the game some day. |

so you have a small well armed group...they have ready made bases (hense the recycling tanks) and they land and are ready to conquere the planet...however the colonist have begun to grow into self sustaining socities over the time it took for the soldiers to get their and they just don't have the man power to overwhelm everybody (but they do have the firepower) so the soliders are forced to set up childrens creches and change their beliefes some to main some form of growth however since their are so few women in their army the rate of growth is increadably slow... |

i have played three games with them and let the computer play them once... when the computer played them i had the game set on librian and when i finally found them thay only had one base and they were building a colony pod...and it had like a billion red minerals in it where the base's population hadn't grown any... |

when i actually played them the first game i forced morgan to submit...and got the gians down to one base before mindworms killed one of my bases and killed all of my garrisons...then gaian mindworms came and exterminated me... |

I think that's the biggest problem with custom factions, because people usually design them for their particular playing style and the computer just doesn't have that ability. This faction has to be run correctly or exactly what you said happened with the computer will happen every time. I don't think the computer can run this one at all. The computer surprises me, too-- after I won my last game I put on the scenario editor and was shocked to see that the spartans had been using free market economics. They were fighting an effective war, too, having completely wiped out the university (who repeatedly begged me for help)-- I just never got around to helping them. |

second game i played with them...i forced morgan lal and santiago to submit to me...and then i fought a nasty war with the belivers...and the beliver actually built a land bridge from their island to mine...it was a real show of good AI however my alliance beat them back...but yang had started in the monsoon jungle and had a huge empire and was leading in tech i was playing blind research and didn't get planned or democracy for a while so i had a slow start and yang was massive...and then yang got the planetary datalinks during a sunspot and and he got the hunter seeker...and i didn't think anything bout the planetary datalinks and kept on giving all my tech to my allies and so yang was getting all my tech...and he kept in the lead till after 2400 until i started nerve gasing and nuking him...but the game got tedious and yang had like 40 choas needle jets just off my shore he would never attack with...so i gave them the fanatic bonus and population cap and started over...and made everyone but morgan submit and then won a transend victory |

the computer can do ok with my faction on accelerated start because it will switch over to planned...but on a normal start it sucks ass with them... but i would take anybody on with them...and i have created three other factions too but this is my favorite... i'm trying to create a good communist faction but haven't been able to do that yet |

I'm not sure about the -5 growth. That means it's gonna be a while before you can start building colony pods. -4 was bad enough, IMHO.PS: Thanks, Smeagol. |
