I have had the game about two months and the only people I play with are the UoP because they are so damn good. A network node at everybase and a huge tech advantage. Their disadvantages are basically cancelled out by secret projects. Anyway, I was about to start a new game and I want to play with someone other than the UoP. Who is best?

There is no best faction. But since you like UOP you like good research. The second best research faction is the peacekeepers. You can population boom with their bases and have size 9 cities while morgan is stuck at 4. I'd recommend the peacekeepers if you like to be really ahead in tech.

One of my friends was playing Peacekeepers once and the only way he got tech was with probe teams. Is everybody that far behind UoP?

they are behind, but can quickly catch up. You just have to know how to play the peacekeepers. The most important thing is population. They can get more of it faster than anyone else. Build creches and rec. commons first off. Conver to democ. and planned economy. Raise pysch if you need to to prevent drone riots. Then switch back and adjust as necessary. The UOP +2 labs and networks nodes give them a big advantage early on, but when the peacekeepers can have size 9 cities while the UOP is struggling with riots at 5. They can catch up in science in the first 75 years.

this is mainly for single player. Catching up to a human player as UOP can be quite challenging.

Each of the factions has its pros and cons. For a challenge, try one of the aggressive factions on for size. The UoP may have the advantage in technology but suffers on support and production capability. Probe teams level the playing field very quickly, and forcing the UoP to submit puts their research in your hands. Check some of the old threads on other factions for more information: a well-developed Hive or even the Believers can eventually crank out some hefty research.

I agree with Earwicker. Try playing each of the factions once. This is actually how I spent my first seven games, learning the game. Not only does it teach you some generalized playing strategies, but it is much easier to beat a faction if you have played as that faction. Good luck.

Yeah, I'd have to say the UoP too, b/c of the research. With them, you can have really good advanced weapons. Once, I had a 4-2-4 weapon and Believers threatened me with the 1-2-1 things...

Wow every1 digs the knowledge factions!!
I too have to admit I like em 2 but if u wanna try another kewl faction I'd go for the hive! its awesome! but u have to keep building cities, that's ur pro ( growth rate) more money more ppl more places for secret projects ........ the possibilities r endless

But in short all factions r great if u know how to play em:-)

If you're going for knowledge then you shouldn't be the believers (obvious) or the hive (-2 econ kills early research).

I've been threatened with gun foils when i have 2-3-1 defenders

actually the second best research faction is the spartans...try them with deomocratic/free market/knowledge. the spartans are best at using free market because of their +1 police. they have better efficency than the Pk's and the can use free market. they are a great conquering faction. try them out for size.

As have we all. Those invincible laser infantry scare the heck out of my neutronium defenders.

But just because the AI has no idea of how to effectively play conquerors should not scare you away from them. Miriam's tech disadvantage means nothing when the Univ is nearby and ready to be plucked. the Hive can similarly overcome its economic setback.
