Sometimes toward the middle of my games I automate all my cities and formers because I have so many. Usually I set them all on Research and they usually do what they're told. (Usually)

Where can you set them to research?

On each city screen, across the top, there are 5 "bars". The middle one is for govenor on/off, select one of the other four to have the govenor concentrate in a particular area.

I used the city governors a bit for the first game or two I played, but now I never do - they just seem to make lots of bad choices, and don't follow my general building style.

I find build queues MUCH more useful - I'll usually set a new city to build (typically) a queue of sentry/garrisson, former, colony pod (in the early game at least), recycling tanks, children's creche, energy bank, etc. and not have to worry about it for quite some time unless the flow of the game changes in that area.

Also I use some of the former automations like "build road to X", but have grown out of using complete automation for anything.

I always set my colonies to build colony pods until I get skimships or better. Then I build a few of skimship probe teams (they work great, it's a pity the computer doesn't design them for you), impact skimships or better, and transports. But when (IF) I get cruisers, I use them for transports. Anyway, I never use governers, and the only time I automate a unit is when it's a former (I'm no good at terraforming) unless there's some fungus in the way of my units. :^)

I used the CGs in the very first game I played - on the easiest level. It was clear then that they really didn't know what they were doing. If the Guvs are that stupid what does it say about the workers?

Anyway, I used to automate the formers but recently I have seen the light. I would, though, excuse those who want to automate some formers with a mega-empire.

I second Rudebw0y on this one. I only use roads/tubes to X, and nothing else automatic. I like to be in full control of my empire.
