fungus has very good defensive qualities - slows down enemy units, hides friendly unit to do a sneak attack
Mountains are also useful - put a city on the top and enemy artillary are useless. If you put artillary on top of a mountain, it does a lot of damage to low down units - doesn't destroy them, but softens them up for a big attack, with few casualties.
