Assuming you play with blind research off...Which of the early technologies you go after. I don't mean out of the initial choices, like Biogenetics, I mean a technology that you consider important enough to go after. Some go for particle impactor Some go for air power Some (with a different style)go after industrial automation So, let's make a poll, vote for your favorite early tech and if you like, give your reasons.

Particle Impactor. If you run into one of the nutcases early on, like Sparta, Hive or Believers, you need the Impact Rovers to take out their forces. Development counts for nothing if someone takes it from you. Air power is too far away. Matthew Greet |

I play blind research, and find that if I get impact weapons and rovers early, I can build half a dozen impact rovers and wipe out just about anyone, even Yang if my troops are experienced enough to balance out his perimeter defenses. I don't think there's any way for the AI to beat a good rover rush without blocking roads with needlejets (midgame), which it doesn't know how to do. Human opponents are another story, but not usually much different. |

This is sort of a early middle game tech, but you can get to it fast enough if you try: fusion power. The powerful units this tech affords can really turn the tide in your favor. If you want a strictly early tech, Centauri Empathy for the Green economics and thereby ability to capture hoardes of mind worms. |

Early Tech is strongly influenced by SPs.I tend to base my early research goals about getting those required for the SPs as early as possible. I tend to go for those SPs which provide unique abilites over those which provide free base facilites, as the base facilites can be built at each city, but unique abilites cannot be duplicated (naturally). - I find I usually get most of the early ones I want anyway. So, Centauri Ecology (for The Weather Paradigm), Industrial Automation (for the Planetary Transit System), and Centauri Empathy (for The Empath Guild). Centauri Empathy also gives me Soc/Econ:Green, so that probably wins as the best early tech for me. For slightly later techs, most of my research is aimed towards Mind/Machine Interface for the Cyborg Factory, and Bio-Engineering for Clean Reactor. Clean Reactors make large scale warfare, terraforming, exploration, expansion etc all possible.

My favorite is Environmental Economics. Not only removes energy restrictions but it gives you tree farm and terraform up/down.Some comments... Particle impactor seems strong but I like to play peacefully. Air power just doesn't work. I tried to go after it once but I had to neglect other more important techs. In the end I got a bad position. Going for fusion power seems an interesting idea. Thanks Locust, I' ll try it. |

Mobility, Flexibility, and Air Power are the holy trinity. After that is Spaceflight for the nukes. |
