When you lose a city do you lose all units that the city supports? I noticed when I took over a city I took control of a former supported by it... does this apply to military units as well? That would be ridiculous, so I hope not.

yes you do gain all units, but cities with more units cost the price of the units you are taking over (possibly not the full, but I believe so) in addition to the cost of the city.
