If you think it takes too much time to build those fancy units, make a scout patrol and upgrade to whatever you want. It will cost you about 300 energy but if you hurry the production in the city it will cost about 3000

And you know why? It's because they cost lots of money, if you haven't got a prototype yet. And it doesn't seem as if you have build any. But it sounds incredible if it isn't the fact. |

Once you've built a prototype and you start production on an military unit [at least 1 year after you add it to the production screen], it costs <300 energy credits to rush it to completion. However, once you have the Nanofactory SP, it becomes just as cheap to upgrade an unit as it is to build it. In that case, it makes sense to build full-featured units only at your home bases, which has large mineral production. For frontier bases and intermediate bases, it is more practical to build cheaper units and then upgrade them with cash. |

The upgrade option is actually very useful in tactical situations. Once you have orbital insertion capability, it's a great idea to build a Drop/High Morale unit, do an orbital insertion into the combat zone, and use upgrade to convert the unit to another type more suitable for ground combat. My personal favorite in the end game is to take a Drop/High Morale infantry and convert it to a BlinkGrav infantry unit. Absolutely deadly against enemy bases. |

Upgrade is also useful for mass changes. Often I have a lone dinky defender in each of my cities (at least during relative Peace). At certain pts, I'll build a higher level unit and then mass upgrade all at once. |

Here's a fun thought for you. Design two identical units, except give one the special ability trained, and the other a useful special ability (like AAA tracking, clean). Then upgrade one into the other. Upgraded units keep their training levels. Muhahaha! Your UoP pal, Lowfyr |

Even better, a fission scout infantry costs the same as a trained fission scout infantry once you have quantum or singularity engine. So any base can built a trained scout infantry in a 1-2 turns, which can then be upgraded to any unit you want. |
