In general, I do little terraforming other than planting forests. How much of an effect will a -3 Planet rating have on my ecological damage and the resulting assault by the planet on me?

Look in the SMAC datalinks under advanced topics - the formula you seek is there.d.brodale |

I probably won't get much out of that, though, seeing as I don't understand ecological damage too well. Can you explain to me in a non-statistical way how much it will affect fungus production, mindworm attacks, and stuff like this? I'd like to use free market economy during peacetime. Thanks. |

Since I normally play the Gaians with +3 or higher planet I can only shudder to think what -3 planet would mean. You'd have to have sensors in every forest square and a sizable standing army in each city to fend off the attacks. Keep your area clear of fungus and when new fungus appears...clear it with formers. Build trance sentinels and patrol your area with aircraft to find the lurking worms before they find you. |

Don't add sensors, they'll only ADD ECO-DAMAGE. Trance Scouts built out of a command center is usually the best bet. Plus foresft aren't a high ecodamge item, even though they seem the first to blow. |

-3 Planet is not too bad to work with as long as you do not produce eco-damage through production. I have found that the mindworms that wander in from time to time are a little meaner than normal but other than that, no problem. This is with PKs, Free Market and Wealth (putting Morgan to shame in the process:-). |

Oops, that should be PKs with Democracy, Free Market, and Wealth. Also, the whole continent is forested and all bases have Tree Farms and Hybrid Forests. Who cares about -3 planet? |

I never really read the manual, but sensors add to ECO damage? Why? Are they leaching radiation into the ground or something I don't know about? |

Sensors do cause eco-damage, like all other terraforming you do on Planet. However, facilities like tree farm and hybrid forest will make sensors inside a city radius safe for use. For outside, there is always Pholus Mutagen. In short, don't let eco-damage concerns prevent you from putting up a sensor net. When my formers are done putting up farms and forests around my cities, I always have them start building sensors everywhere. |

I think that the manual states that eco-damage through terraforming (as opposed to mineral production) is based on the amount of time a certain terraforming task takes (excluding forests and fungi). If I am remembering correctly a sensor takes quite some turns to complete so that's probably why./Xipe - Cenobite Galore |
