Whatever faction you pick, don't be afraid to choose gov options that are out of character if they're what you need to win (thank CEO Bernard for the warning, I hadn't realized what I was doing to myself until I read one of his posts).Terraform, terraform, terraform. Especially if you happen to have the Weather Paradigm, you can get a huge production advantage early with this project because the other factions must research multiple techs to get the options you have from building one project. Even without it you can get a great head start through wise terraforming practices.
Patrol your borders, don't let Yang, Miriam, or Santiago (or even Lal, the duplicitous jerk) sneak up on a poorly undefended colony and snatch it away.
Make a pact with someone you trust and exchange units/colonies/TECH as often as possible/necessary. You can betray them later, when they can do little to stop you.
Best advice I have: browse these forums, its all here... somewhere. You may have to dig back 20-30 days in the threads, but there's lots of good advice lying about.
