Even though AI is impoving, the pesky computer still builds all of its cities too close for comfort. When I attack and conquer other factions, is there anyway to abandon a city without obliterating it and causing an atrocity? Also, what is this stack command that is spoke of, how do I move a group of units, is that possible???

Have the city in question churn out colony pods while setting the population on stagnant. This is an old Civ trick. You can also just try starving out the blighters.

And the UN charter can always be repealed...

What about the last 10.000? When the cities reaches 1 the colony production is halted....
Do you have to play in a speciel level or what?

Thanks,I know about the old Civ trick of churning out settlers until the city disappears. So far that hasn't worked for me in SMAC, but alas, guess I will keep using the old standards, just wondered if there was an easier more efficient way to do it. Always wondered why it wasn't simply an option in the game... maybe next time...

I know a simple way, but it involves a big KABOOOOM!

Don't forget that you can also spend enrgy credits to hurry the production of colony pods -- esp. useful for the last [pop = 1] remanants of a base.

I've read that atrocities committed during solar flare activity [= no inter-faction communication] "don't coun't" as atrocities because no one can communicate the gross moral abuse. Is this true? I'm too chicken to give it a try. <g>

dbrodale - I've stapled drones during sunspot activity with no penalties. Beats riots.

Ocationally you will run into a situation where you can not starve a base, i.e., the base is located in or about the Monsoon Jungle, in which case obliteration is the only solution.

Of course, the simplest solution is to change the "Obliterating base counts as an atrocity" flag in alpha.txt, and then obliterate the moronically placed bases as you please.

I abide a strict placement code when building bases, so no computer controlled bases are tolerated Oh, and ye olde Civ trick of building a pod doesn't work in SMAC, at least not in the early levels. They just build the pod without diminishing the population.

If you want to obliterate a base without committing an atrocity, you could try to attack the city as long as there are no defenders left. When the last defender is gone, the population of the city drops by one. Then wait until the city builds another unit to defend it. Attack again and population should be decreased. When the city's population reaches one, then invade it. The city should be destroyed. Unfortunately, this trick doesn't work with cities, which have Perimeter Defenses.

Xero? You obliterate ALL enemy bases you take? What about the ones with wonders?

I don't know if you can do this (it works in other games like Master of Orion II) but how about just selling off all the buildings in a city, pumping out all the population into pods until the city is only 1, give it to an enemy as a bribe and then attack the city (which will destroy the city).

It worked with planets in Master of Orion II

Can't you just vote for lifting the Atrocity prohibitions?

Imran: Nah, they can live, most of the time. However, I enjoy playing on the easier difficulties (2nd and 3rd, specifically), so the comp seldom gets any useful wonders anyhow.

Xotor: Highly neat trick. Must attempt that sometime.

Hunterseeker: Yes, but it's better to disable in the text file unless you have a desire to be Planet Busted all over.
