For the poor peasents in the field who have not heard yet, we are getting a new god at the site section. We have used your meager earnings paid as taxes to build this lavish palace to the gods, and pay for these heralding trumpets too. So, as you pass this thread, please pay your respects, and maybe give us a donation of some energy credits in a post to insure that you're in favor of our new god. Also post in Latin please. Who knows, he may even stop in...

Now if only those trumpets could get "Ruffles and Flourishes" right...

P.S. The Latin is optional.

Hmmm Does King MikeH of the Nexus know about this? I shall have to go and inform him of his new neighbors.

Chief Messenger Zan Thrax, NC of the Nexus

And in order to rack up a few more points in the topic entry # contest (yesh, I know I'm hopelessly outclassed, but bear with me (?)):

What I meant was that even such a supernova among us luminously intelligent and perspicacious Internet users as SnowFire (or isn't he writing about his own ascendance to godhood?) can, at times, step in the proverbial cowmuck... (No offense ;))

MikeH posted 09-03-98 07:10 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MikeH  Click Here to Email MikeH
Humbly and a bit embarrassed,

I think SnowFire is referring to my ascendancy as god of The Site (he could have mentioned my name :) ). I would prefer to remain low key so please, just pretend I'm not here.

MikeH: What REALLY happened to the revolution? Is your ascension in any way connected to it? It's sad to see a leader and comrade leave the Party line, but I guess that's human nature... Not mine, though, I'll keep at the heels of the vicious capitalist lackeys!

Check out Dork Fest in the Factions section for the negotiations to surrender I can't remember where the actual surrender is posted I'm afraid.
In the end I started working against the system from the inside, members only clubs have all but vanished from the system, the I clubs rule, even Mount Olympus is open to everyone and that was necessary because otherwise the M club would be there.

CCC club, CD club and this Nexus:

before it turned into a Nexus held most revolutionary stuff. Along with Kemm's SOMEBODY HELP ME thread.

By the way we are going to hammer you on Saturday, I reckon 3-1 with a Michael Owen Hattrick unless Glenn Hoddle is a complete idiot, again. :)

MikeH: You're welcome to it. I think playing is much more fun than watching, when it comes to football. Also, I happen to be Austro-Finnish, so I have an easy way out when the Swedish team loses. ;)

Ah oh well, how are these for chants:

"Wem t upp all sillen?"

"Du skall ka hem I en 4-drras Volvo."

"Har du lst senaste kapitalen i Tony Adams bok?"

"Dom r mycket starka p vnstern. Dr ser man vad 45 rs socialism gr."

"Han r lng, han r blond, han har en stads pension vrd en miljon pond."

"Sjung bara nr du vinner Eurovisions trlingen."

"Min gubbe r en viking, han br en vikings hjlm, han krde mig I en storbt till en fotbolls match."

"Alfred Nobels skarpa arm."

No offence, I didn't write them but I thought they were mildly amusing. :)

I love playing and watching but I'm glad you knew what I was talking about.

MikeH: Delightful chants, but where did you get them? Do you know what they signify? Are these authentic chants used by British supporters? Would you like me to correct them grammatically & otherwise?

I'm truly fascinated: "Who ate all the herring?" Indeed! One of life's mysteries...

Thank you for ... whatever this was...

MikeH posted 09-04-98 11:41 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MikeH  Click Here to Email MikeH
They are corruptions of english chants,

Who ate all the herring - who ate all the pies, directed at a fat player or the referee. :)

You only sing when you're winning Eurovision- from "You only sing when you're winning" which is a very common chant.

Have you read the latest extracts from Tony Adams' book?- Self explanatory and topical (he wrote a book in which he criticised Glenn Hoddle

They're very strong down the left. That's 45 years of socialism for you.- Joke at your government's expense.

He's tall, he's blonde, he's got a state-funded pension worth a million pounds. - this is a common format for chants, eg Arsenal (and France's) Emmanuelle Petit-
He's blonde, he's quick, his names a porno flick, Emmanuelle, Emmanuelle.
but this one doesn't quite scan. :)

My old man's a viking, he wears a viking hat, he took me in his longboat to see a football match.

Fron the song My old man's a dustman.
"My old man's a dustman, he wears a dustmans hat, he wears gorblimey(?) trousers and lives in a council flat."

Alfred Nobel's Brainy Army. Corruption of from the Barmy army who seem to follow any english sports team anywhere. (Specifically Alfred Ramsey in this case)

I got them out of the paper (the Guardian which is notorious for bad spelling) so I don't really want the corrections, thanks though.

How do I pronounce
"Wem t upp all sillen?"

is it

Vem aet oop al sillen?

MikeH: Notice I passed 100? Aah, C at last (though I did cheat... I finally went to the Nexus and joined in the fun...).

The 'e' in 'Vem' should be pronounced like the 'e' in 'set'.

The '' in "Vem t upp all sillen?" should be pronounced like the 'a' in English 'awe', or something like that...

The 'u' is akin to a cockney 'u' (like in 'stuff'...)

The 'a' in 'all' is like in 'falala' (you know, in old English songs, etc., an "open" 'a').

The 'i' is like in 'if', and the 'e' is like in 'fen'.

I wonder what this will sound like when you try to pronounce it...

Anyway, thanks for the explanation, and see you next week, since I've stayed on at the office an hour after my work day was finished, and the boss just came in, looked at this, and seemed a bit doubtful...

Ta!

It seems the SITEGOD has showered the country of Sweden with his blessings this past weekend - great weather (we almost tripled the # of days with temperatures in excess of 25 degrees centigrade this year - we had one this summer, and almost got two more this weekend... - Riiillly stinking bad summer, but good for sensitive baby skin, I try to tell myself...) AND somehow the British football team didn't ... quite ... win...

Sorry for you, or are your powers not just virtually real, which would make this match outcome a result of your generosity? ;)

MikeH posted 09-07-98 05:29 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MikeH  Click Here to Email MikeH
Grrrrr. I didn't even watch the match in the end but I hear we were bad, defended too deep and played with none of our typical English grit.
I was going to watch the highlights but I heard the result and couldn't face it.

I just hope we qualify top of the group. I don't want the lottery of a play-off

Hey, I hope you do, too. By the way, how'd the Swedish chanting go?
MikeH posted 09-10-98 04:44 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MikeH  Click Here to Email MikeH
Didn't really have much to chant about. :(

I think I've got your pronunciation right though, good examples. Hopefully it will be more useful at Home.

Tapiolan poika posted 09-10-98 12:40 PM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for Tapiolan poika  Click Here to Email Tapiolan poika
Well, doesn't chanting serve a purpose when things are going less than perfectly, as well?

Ooops! This is too much fun, I forget what time it is between reading this and switching to do some work... Gotta run home. Also, they're showing the last part (6) of the British TV series "Touching evil" tonight. Sooo good, that. (Know it? Same script writer as "Cracker" - great dialogue, OK trickiness to the plots. Aaaah. But I'll miss it when it's over. Do you know if they made more than 6 parts?) Anyway, I'm off.

Btw, I'm sorry for bringing up the sexist thread in Ideas for SMAC to the top again - but it had to be done...

MikeH posted 09-11-98 04:53 AM ET     Click Here to See the Profile for MikeH  Click Here to Email MikeH
Sorry I haven't seen it (or heard of it), I don't watch much TV anymore, Cracker was great though.
