I got a email from Firaxis. Here it goes
The demo should be available for download on www.aliencrossfire sometime
late next week.

Are you joking?
If they gave out a demo it wouldn't be too hard to turn it into the full game. If you already have full version SMAC then wouldn't you just have to overwrite the files with the alien crossfire ones?
Even if they did fix that, would the old turn hack work?
At the very least you would be able to play with most of the feature of the new factions, just replace morgan.txt gaian.txt etc. with the new text files. Not all the functions would be available, but most would.

GameSpot has announced that the demo is available. But their link to download it just comes back to the SMACX homepage. The demo has not been officially launched here or at firaxis.com yet.

I sent the news to SidGames and Apolyton. It is up at apolyton and it will be up on sidgames in a couple of minutes

I think I'm going to avoid the Demo, and demo discussions till I can actually buy the full expansion pack.
Why? With SMAC, the game had hundreds of new features, units, etc, and the demo gave us a glimpse at a few of them.
With the expansion pack, the number of new features will be few. Either very few will be revealed, and the demo will not be worth the download, or else too many will be given away, and the expansion pack will no longer be a surprise.
I'm willing to wait....
