Besides fixing the aimless wanderings of ground troops and needlejets, Firaxis should "teach" the AI to combine air and ground combat. I have never seen the AI put a needlejet over a ground unit(or a ship) so that the ground unit can't be attacked by its opponent on its next turn.(Unless the opponent has plenty of air to air fighters.) Let's hear about some other specific AI tactical improvements that can be made. It might be too late for SMACX but not for CIV3.

I think that is a bad example because I think of that as a bug. If a ground and air unit are in the same square a ground unit should be able to attack the ground unit and an air unit should be able to attack the air unit. In Civ2 (I haven't encountered this in SMAC yet) if you had a tank and a bomber in the same square it couldn't be attacked with a tank because of the bomber, and if you hit it with a fighter the fighter would fight the tank and probably lose. It's tough to deal with this in turn based games because you'd like to have a way that you can attack with the tank and bomber at the same time. I would like to see the AI attack with multiple units better. Rather than attack with one unit every 2-3 turns. |

The single most useful AI tactic is when you are kicking the ass of the AI the computer glitches and reboots.Very frustrating |

Perhaps the best tactic is to probe-subvert the newly conquered bases, capturing a goodly portion of your (previous) army. It is easy enough to take precautions to guard against this tactic, though. Needlejets can be used to interdict the roads leading into the base, and counterinsurgency probes of your own, accompanying the occupying troops, will usually do the trick.JAMiAM |

The best taktik would be if the AI started to use more trops in attack instead of just walking around with them! Sometimes the AI realy goes bananas and sends a lot of trops in a attack but when you look in the security nexus more than 2/3 are not commited(not counting defensiv units). Realy a waste of firepower.

The most useful tactic of the Opponent Engine is surrendering. An improvement would be to not have probes walk up to a city, then circle it. Probe teams are extremely vulnerable and relatively expensive compared to other early units. While it's a nice thing on Citizen or Talent (bottom 2 levels for those learning or just not wanting all the hassle of higher level games), it's extremely dumb on the top three levels of play. -Darkstar |

I was Uop and my faction was simply exhausted and over extended fighting back Morgan but after a few deciding battles I had the man pinned down to two cities. It was still fairly early in the game so it was difficult enough to muster a few laser squads but now I was fighting deep into enemy teritory. On a final push I had something like 6 laser squads pounding on his secound to last city. I was about to take it when 3 probe teams came waltzing down the road linking the remainder of his fallen empire. POP,POP,POP, Now I was down to 3 tired sqauds facing 3 of my own verteran squads. I WAS SO PISSED! I just wanted to hammer those traitorous BASTARDS and those slimy probe teams. That is the most inovative move I've seen from the AI. Actually I wish it could be toned down a little. I mean, (MY OPINION) I can't beleive 3 entire units could be so susceptible to bribery... Especially veterans! Wheres the faith in your country! Too conventional GreasyPig |
