The new alien factions have some potential, but they also lead to the following questions and concerns:* Will they feel bound by the U.N. Charter? I imagine that the human factions would all join in vendetta against them if the aliens PBed somebody, but would the aliens declare vendetta simply because a PB was used? * Will the alien language have to be learned, and will the aliens have to learn the human language, or is it like in Star Trek where everybody speaks the same language? There is that Universal Translator secret project.... * Will the aliens have their own exclusive tech tree? Will the only way the humans can get alien tech, and vice versa, be diplomacy? * What about terrain improvements? I can't picture the aliens planting Earth trees, but if these are the aliens that built the monoliths... * Will the aliens be alien aliens, or just members of Trek's Forehead Of The Month Club?

So far, it looks like its just a 7 custom faction club. So unless they recode SMAC, aliens will obey the UN Charter. And you will be able to talk with them. And they will plant TREES. Wow. Talk to them? Sure... looks like one of them is going to be Orange slot, which is super expansist and hate everybody. Not sure about the other. And the graphics have Morgan, Santiago, Deidre, and Zak on the 7 faction leader cover on the graphic (Although the box doesn't). Maybe they can't make up their mind about having 7 new factions after all? I mean, you just need a couple of Bug Eyed Monsters, a 7 of 9 Ripoff, and a Kevin Coster Piss Drinking Ocean living faction...They have teased us with a tech tree replacement, so maybe they are going to throughout all those useless level 4 and above techs that noone ever uses anyways... -Darkstar |

It seems to me that darkstar is a little pessimistic. If you don't think the expansion will provide more interesting gameplay, then don't buy it. Those who (like me) have a hard time designing balanced factions and editing faction pic. files, look forward to getting the expansion, exploring the new techs and vehicle improvs, and laughing off whatever inconsistencies they find, will enjoy the expansion thoroughly. My question for Firaxis is: when is it coming out? I want my copy.(PS: I use the techs above level 4) |

I wonder will aliens have diferent vehicle types? actually, I think that aliens should have completley diferent tech tree. Weapons, base facilities, secret projects, it should all be diferent. Take a look at the Starcraft to see diference between races. If I get Alien speeder teraformer building same looking farms and mines as human, it's bad. In that case no way I'm buying the expansion. |
