I was wondering if anybody else would get this error. I'm playing Transcend Ironman with the Gaians, and it crashes every time I try to convoy resources from this solar collector with my new crawler.

I've posted the save game in regular, zipped and rar'd format at:

http://home.columbus.rr.com/luna/gaianipf.sav
http://home.columbus.rr.com/luna/gaianipf.zip
http://home.columbus.rr.com/luna/gaianipf.rar

or by FTP at:

ftp://smac:[email protected]

It crashes no matter what version of SMAC I'm using. I'm running Win98 Second Edition, and my hardware's pretty normal. My system is:

Pentium III 550 w/ 256-meg
Graphics Blaster Riva TNT (AGP)
FirePort 40 UW-SCSI (PCI)
Monster Sound II MX300 (PCI)
LinkSys 100-meg ethernet (PCI)

I've got no IDE or ISA devices and no floppy drive, but that shouldn't matter. The only network stuff installed is TCP/IP with DHCP for a switched LAN with an NT4 box. My desktop is 1600x1200, so SMAC runs at 1024x768, but it still crashes if I bump the resolution down to 640x480.

My email is <[email protected]>. I'd appreciate it if anybody wants to try out the save file and see if it crashes for them.

I also get some really nasty static during combat sometimes after I've been playing for a long time. This is probably just something with A3D being a little buggy.

Have you tried posting this to the support thread?

I see your problem plain as day...its that darn PIII 550 chip you are running. You need to immediatly remove it from your system and replace it with a more run-of-the-mill 486-25sx. (Send the pIII to me). This way, you will not make it to the point in the game where you can build convoys before you are old and no longer interested in playing SMAC. Problem solved.

Yeah, I also posted it to the support thread, but since nobody goes in there I posted it here, too (yes, that makes me a bit of an idiot contributing to the cross-topic disarray of this message board, but hey).

HMFIC:
Seeing as my computer is worth 10X as much as my car, I'm afraid if I send you my CPU, it would lower my net worth to the point that would have to re-file my taxes, and I don't want to arouse any scrutiny by the IRS, having blatantly lied on my initial return to keep from owing $1000.

It crashed.... Then my computer proceded to tell me all about Vogon poetry, did you know that its the 3rd worst in the universe?

I realy ought to change that error message...

aceplayer:

I was just trying to see if I could get a 3000-foot high 7x7 solar farm going (310 energy before bonuses)... I was pretty impressed that I hadn't been attacked yet, but I gave a way a decent amount of techs/cash.

It's the standard huge map. The island just looks a little funny because it grew from terriformeing so high.

I thought it was pretty cool, but it kinda puts a crimp in my plans when it crashes as soon as I tell that 10th crawler to convey resources. Actually, it also crashes if I cancel orders on any of the other crawlers and tell it to convoy again. Since it only crashes when you push [O] on a solar collector, and since it crashes before it even puts the the box asking you which resource to convoy (and showing you how much energy), it seems like it must be a problem calculating the appropriate amount of energy for the square.

I just figured out that the problem goes away if you skip to the next turn then tell the crawler to convoy energy. Really weird... I just hope it doesn't do it again.

Horgawitz:

Perhaps you should upgrade your error message to the second worst poetry, such as the works of Grunthos--"Ode to a Small Lump of Green Putty I Found in My Armpit One Midsummer Morning."
