Well, it looks legit...but the date on it is April 16, 1999--so is there perhaps a newer version to be released later? Or has this just been sitting there since April?
There were no changes to the readme.txt file over what Jeff already gave us.

OH MY GOD!!! IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, THERE'S A LITTLE THING ON MY TASK BAR THAT SAYS "500 kb of smacp4e.exe"!!! COULD IT REALLY BE TRUE??? MAYBE IT'S THE SEVENTH SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE!!!

Well, as I understand it, those four haven't been released yet because the italian version of the patch isn't ready yet.

From the last two posts should I assume that the 'e' patch was originally intended for the US (and not UK) version? The one I have and that I can play w/out the CD in?

The proxy here stopped FTP downloads a couple of months ago

Did you take a look at ACN recently? That's what they posted :
"Yes, the 4.0 patch was discovered hanging out on the owo server, but don't download it if it's still there by the time you find the link.
If Firaxis meant for the patch to be downloaded they would have publically announced it, for all we know that file may cause SMAC to badly screw up! Just a friendly word of advice :-)"
What do you think of that? Would there be any reason for Firaxis to put the patches on their FTP without wanting them to be downloaded?

I have played about 5 hours of v4.0 SP, up to about MY2270. I also have played a couple of turns of pbem using the new patch. No problems, so far. In the pbem game, you can see the other factions SE settings, so I'd suggest all players of MP games patch, ASAP, to keep an even playing field. Not that this is a major advantage, but it does take some of the guesswork out of trying to figure out just what your opponents are using.

And why is the french version longer? Are french words longer in length? Oh well at least it's .2 megs less. That's another 2 minutes for me.

Actually, thanks first go to MightyTree and Ted for stealing the patch from a hidden ftp site (I suspect you just followed the 3.0 address back, stuck in 4 instead of 3 and there is was? Great trick). Who know how long that was just sitting there? We could have been playing patch 4.0 months ago!!! (well, maybe).
As for the 4.0 list, I understand that many people are upset that by 4.0 100+ issues are still out there. But we knew going in that 4.0 was not going to be a major fix--that the really cool stuff was going into SMACX. I'm just happy we got some of our most pressing concerns to Firaxis before it was too late.
And, once again (call me what you will), I am thankful to Firaxis for taking our list so seriously. By the way, Firaxis, how long was that patch just sitting there?
