Once we get SMAC perfected, we need to start thinking about the sequel. My idea:

Interstellar setting where you find new planets to settle. Once you find a habitable planet, then you can start colonizing it using a SMAC-like game. Your bases can grow across the world and you can also build new ships to further explore the cosmos and find other worlds to settle. You can build warships to fight interstellar battles to keep/take control of worlds. You can have the different factions each wanting their own worlds to propogate their views.

Think of the trade/economic model that you could have to play with.

Imagine a mineral rich world colonized by Morgan Industries encrusted with factories spewing out goods, Bolo Mark XXXIIIs, and warships.

Imagine a garden world colonized by Gaia with parklike aras all over the world where Diedre has lots of trees to run naked among.

etc.

Your ideas?

SEQUAL! Are you nuts, the game is hardley finished yet with a patch coming out nearly every week! The sequal is YEARS away.

Well, I think we'll probably see a sequal more in the line of the introduction of new factions from the UNITY II. . .and. . .maybe the arrival of an alien faction(s). . .and maybe even the introduction of new native life forms, brought out from deep inside the planet by the Planet Busters.

SMAC: The Phantom Menace

Seriously, Multi-planet/interstellar setting sounds most likely to me from a story standpoint, even if it has been done before.

I think the colonizing multiple planets is a really good idea, I was thinking about that myself. I think they should do that and you can have the abilitly to re-inhabit Earth and the other planets.

Here's a Plot I though up-

You begin as one of 7-10 Human factions. After a massive planet wide war between factions, Human life has once again been almost wiped from the universe during a time between the last years of the game. When you start out, global warming has begun and Chiron will soon be covered by a massive flood. AS the leader of your faction, you are responsible for relocating your followers to a more inhabitable planet, and then expand your empire to the farthest reaches of the known universe, while conducting diplomacy with other factions.

I know it sounds kind of dumb, but I'm no Hollywood script writter. I just think it would be cool to have the ability to colonize other planets, and then you could terraform them to have things such as a breathable atmosphere for humans. I think it would also be cool if you could land a group of coloists on Mars and turn it into an Earth-like planet, by doing such things as increasing the thikness of the atmoshpere and melting the ice caps to create oceans. Or you could leave the plantet just the way it is. Terraforming to that extent would take a LONG time but would have significant applications, such as beiing able to retireve more resourses from the ground or allowing the coloists to make thier cities bigger by not having to worry about keeping the air pressurized. This would allow you to have cities take up mutiple squares. You could also be able to coloize moons and newly discovered plantets. Maybe an alien race could come into play...

Tell me what you think of this.

Sounded better the first time :-)

I think it might be cool if the oft-mentioned but never seen aliens with their high technology returned to retake the system while the factions attempted to take the planets inside. Sort of like Independence day, with the factions having to sort out their personal differences before they could go nuts on the aliens.

ALRIGHT! I WANT A GOOD SEQUEL TO ASCENDANCY!

Ascendancy. The problem with that - those rat people and the fact that once you became powerful absolutely everyone insisted on bugging you EVERY SINGLE TURN! Had it been a SM/BR game it would have been so much better and lasted me longer than the evening it took to complete with those rat things.

I know the perfect sequel to SMAC (Sid and Brain are probably thinking along the same line ).

First, let's review the Ascent to Transcendence victory:

No longer mere earthbeings and planetbeings are we, but bright children of the stars! And together we shall dance in and out of ten billion years, celebrating the gift of consciousness until the stars themselves grow cold and weary, and our thoughts turn again to the beginning.

-- Lady Deirdre Skye,
"Conversations with Planet"

So, after you ascended, you became pure thoughts. Then tens of billions of years later, the whole universe was annihilated in the Big Crunch. You and your fellow transcendants took on the responsibility to recreate the universe from scratch. Feeling nostalgic of your human years, you created a rocky planet, planted trees, flowers, filled it with animals, birds. Using your old selves as an image, together you created two beings who were capable of free will and logic thinking. But soon their descendands started fighting each other. You and your fellow transcendants splintered, each to guide one of the fighting human civilization to victory.

Oh, you called that place Eden.

Spherical world would be REALLY cool.
A realistic economy, where you trade goods because you NEED them, not just to make money.
Planets to colonize.
