(Apologies to all you veterans who already know this, but I found this invaluable and it took me some hunting through the threads to find it, so I thought I'd post it as a new message as it's just sooooooo useful.)For anyone who suffers from SMAC slowing down during play, download MemTurbo from: http://www.memturbo.com/productinfo.htm Instantly solves the problem. Also invaluable for use at any time, not just when playing SMAC or other memory-hungry games.

There once was a girl named Nell, who posted to forums so well. SMAC drove her off the deep end, she didn't get her sleep and went from Deirdre to Marian as well. JAMiAM

I thought I was bad but your name seems to pop up all over the place in this Forum. Take a Break man, you've got your whole life in front of you. You dont want to spend the rest of it fused to a computer do you! |

Bossman,I'm sorry to say, but I really don't have a life, only (too many) opinions. And, if you don't want me around, well...sniff...sniff... I'll just take my ball and go home. I've recently found myself spending more time trawling the forums than playing SMAC, just because there is so much social interaction and truly interesting people out here. My day job has me cooped-up in a small office acting as a glorified gatekeeper. I have very few opportunities to get too far away from the blasted CRT, so I put to use in a manner which satisfies ME! I guess I could shut up, log off and read a book. But I don't. I would rather chat with you! Nell,
I mean it in the nicest possible sense. You are one of the aforementioned "interesting people" and I look forward to your posts and replies as they always are a model of civility and clarity, two characteristics sometimes lacking in these forums. BTW, make my fantasy complete, tell me you look like Helena Bonham Carter! And, sound like her too! JAMiAM I'm like dogshirt at the park, all over the place, and usually underfoot!

Jam man,My advice would be to quit your job, by some new clothes and hit the dance floor. Get married have kids. Its your choice but I am glad that you enjoy chatting away at these forums. It would not be the same without you. |

Sorry for not knowing what a memory leak is, but could someone explain it to me ? And how does that one program fix it ? |

Dutch Boy, (are you really dutch?)Soem programs use more memory than they should and hence, slow down your programs (Games etc) This program clears the memory on your computer that is being used and dosesnt need to be making your other programs run faster. It works quite well I would recommend it. Anything else just fire away. Bossman |

Hogging memory: A program using up more memory than it should is a Hog.Leaking memory: A program allocating memory but failing to release it when it's done with it is said to be leaking. It usually stems from bad programming (although I admit it, sometimes it's very tricky and it can be easy to overlook the release of resources to the OS, especially when programming under Windows). Hope this helps -Aredhran Do I qualify for that promotion to "Geek" now ? (My ex-girlfriend used to say I was going to be promoted whenever I got a little bit technical or carried away about computers...)

Bossman,Happy to see that your tongue was in your cheek. I didn't think that I'd been on these forums long enough to be anybody's enemy, with the possible exception of yin26, who is actually Hannibal Lecter (and not Brian Reynolds as mistakenly posted by Darkstar.) Actually, I am married, and have two lovely daughters, 2 & 7 years old. I have the job that I do because it allows me to make a living wage (barely) and have lots of free time to study (see my profile.) I am the bossman here and can set my own hours to work around my class schedule. I've taken a break this semester to allow my brain and pocketbook to recharge. Besides, I knew SMAC was coming out and I do know my limits, family, SMAC, school, SMAC, job (not career), SMAC, housework, SMAC, game night, SMAC, showers, et cetera, something had to give. My wife said it had better not be the showers. JAMiAM

umbra: sleep?? When there's SMACing to be done?? Surely you jest Bossman: hey, glad it helped, although I freely admit that I got the URL from another post on this site - sorry, original poster, I can't remember your name! JAMiAM: wow, a limerick dedicated to me!!! <chuffed> Mind you, after a couple of turns spent watching the AI blow my favourite base to bits and steal away with the HSA, I just bypass Miriam and go straight from Deirdre to Yang without passing Go.... hehe And thanks for the compliment... comin' right back at ya OK here goes..... I look like Helena Bonham-Carter. I also sound like Helena Bonham-Carter. Now... you have to judge whether one or both of the above statements is a fib!!!!!!!!!!

Nell,First wobbly bits, then...chuffed? I'm afraid that if I keep chatting with you folks from across the pond, I'll have to go out and get the OED. Very afraid actually, since I've long since run out of room on my bookshelves or dollars in my wallet. Perhaps you could save me the trouble and let me know what the latter means. That is, if it will fly past the censors! I think I've got a hold of...umm...I mean an understanding of the former term. My sympathies as to the loss of the HSA. Ouch!!! Roll over the dirty rotten scoundrels and SHOW NO MERCY!!! Oh, and get some sleep. JAMiAM
p.s. It doesn't matter if your fibbing, I'll never know the better. Ain't cyberspace wunnerful? |

I dont know how that question mark slipped in there? anyway I am now a man on a mission. I am going for the record at work to play SMAC all day without my Boss knowing! I have got through fine so far but it is a bit embarrassing when everyone around you is doing something constructive and there your are being payed to play computer games. Charming hey...Bossman: Did I ever tell you I was Brian Reynolds Brother! |

MoSe: My ex' decided that I was not good enough for her and left me for some idiot who was in the same class (she's a student to become technician in radiology). Said idiot dumped her a couple months later (maybe he wasn't so stupid after all)... Serves her right, don't you agree ?Anyway, maybe *your* ex-girlfriend should have crossed the Alps instead of the Atlantic and married me But then again, maybe not, because if I were married I wouldn't have as much time to play SMAC umbra: What does "burning the midnight oil" mean ? To all: Funny how a thread about memory leakage can turn out, isn't it ? Hey, you know what ? The week-end is coming fast ! SMAC time again ! Warm-up them PB silos, and Yang, you better find that key to your bomb shelter, and quick, 'cuz your arse is in the line ! -Aredhran

OK, let's stick to the topic... (huh, what was it about? can't remember...)Aredhran: well, maybe she should, she would have at least married in the Family (SMAC family, I mean). After all, I spent some time with a swiss girl that had just been dumped by a radiology technician ... made me think to a demographic chart that stated that PC-related workers are the bottom category in "success_with_women". Butchers were at the top. What dya have to say, Nell? cleavers(sp? huge chopping knives..) or keyboards? - OED = Oxford English Dictionary? Is there maybe a site where you can download it from? to keep it at hand while in the Forums... my lacksicon would greatly profit. Bossman: spending whole workday in this forum makes me eligible for that record as well?
Maidenhead, could have I spotted it on the map near Mull of Kintyre? umbra1, did you miss my old post in which I begged you to further me a copy of old classic Elite (if you really still have it)? mine is gone and unrecoverable.

Stop making me turn around like an autoformer! Can't keep up with your X-refrenced replies! Say that your Sandhurst quoting in 'Public unveiling...' topic was a coincidence. You pretend making me think I'm already drunk! (that reminds me that next door to the office we have here a cute place named "Banshee - Pogue Mahone's house", where the bar is an isle in the mid of the pub (that poetic verse was serendipitous!) and seen from above is harp-shaped. oh, gotta remember to close the bracket, here)hmmm. figuring how I can make this last figure as an extra-hour in the payroll!
