A friend of mine just picked up SMAC here in portugal, and it seems like it's the UK version. However, it does not seem to let you play the game (even with full install) without the CD. Does this affect other UK users as well?

I had the same problem until I installed the UK 3.0 patch. With the patch, a full install will let you play the game without the CD (well, at least on my system!)

The European versions had copy protection up till v2.0. With v3.0, we did away with it because it was causing a lot of trouble for legit customers.
