I sure wish that the online help for SMAC had a free text "search" facility. I can't seem to find out what changing to "on alert" does, or what (if anything) is different about uranium fields and any other rocky field.Did I miss something in the manual?

Units wake up when an enemy unit is spotted (could mean comes within 1 square or 2) when on alert. Uranium squares generate +1 energy. I think. |

Almost...On Alert means that the unit will ATTACK any enemy unit that comes near it. For land units, this means that they will automatically attack. Sentry means they just wake up when an enemy unit is next to them. The Uranium Fields are a special landmark/feature that give an extra energy per square... -Darkstar |

on alert is very useful when used on tactical needlejets ot choppers. the unit will fly from its base and attack any enemy jet or chopper that tries to attack one of your units or cities. i'm not sure of the range buts its nice to shoot down an enemy jet just before it slaughters one of my terraformers. |

"on alert" has never worked for me. I even had a chopper (SAM,Empath) not even "wake up" and attack when the locust/MW/IotD swarm appeared right next to my city. I don't that order option. I manually patrol my areas, otherwise i end up getting my arse kicked cause the unit that is suppore to take care of this, has now "already moved".horsepucky. a> either take this out of the game on the next patch,or b> fix it so it works, or c> explain to me what i am doing wrong, and clarify the circumstances in which this "order" would be a benefit.

horsepucky? Hi cousin. Hafta say I was very pissd off too when I tried "on alert" and the unit woke up for the *next* turn! That happened in the demo tho. After some buying and some patching, I insanely tried it again and, surprise!, it did work! Can't say when and how the damn thing got fixed.Darkstar, IIRC wake on sentry worked in Civ. Do you actually use 'l' here? I only go for 'H' or 'L'. (er, don't remember what I was up to say...) Will air units on alert attack incoming land invaders too? One more strange thing: I placed a 'H' garrison, a probe and an 'L' rover in a bunker near a newly conquered base, still connected w/ road to enemy base ~5 squares away. Well, each turn I could see the rover check a path with a green line toward that base, then stay put. What was it, a radar scan? I never noticed it w/ alert units in bases. Early morning after JOMT night Hope you enjoy my sparse thinking WorMariOne |

Ok Mo, i will (reluctantly) try 1 more time. the empath chopper that didn't attack was while using v3.0, so i will try (again) using diffrent chassis types. i will prob keep using the manual patrol, as there is enough to worry about in this game without worring weither or not your alerted units are doing their job.
