Someone posted this trick somewhere else and I find it to be quite effective:
Play only on Transcend so the game ends quickly.

I hear you, eNo. So far all my TI games have ended by 2200. I am getting a lot more sleep lately.
(How the hell can my Gaian Scout Patrols defend those countless elite Spartan Impact Rovers?)

Can you believe my friend didn't want to get it. He actually complained about how boring the game is for 8 hours. (While he played it!)

I too am a SMAC addict, and as some one has observed, Sid Meier ought to be investigated by the DEA!
There just might be one cure!

I've talked to a Counsellor and they recommended the patch (V 4.0). He said barring that, I should ween myself slowly from it. He advised not to go cold-turkey and to try his Video Gamers 12 step program.
In the program I would start with a less strenuous game and work my down.
First I should play a simulator, then an RPG, then an RTS, an FPS, a puzzle game, an old space invaders game, minesweeper. I would then have to go to a board game and finally to a game of cards.
I would then finally have Sid Meier's monkey off of my back.
My daily affirmation: My PC is not an appendage of my body.
