Right, time for some confessions. I'll start...I've never played SMAC on any level harder than Thinker. I've used ACEdit to give me a SuperFaction (+2 Tech,+2 Econ,+2 planet,+2 support, no drones, 9 start techs, etc.) I've used the "Picard Manoeuvre" to win battles, pop pods and probe cities. I've used <ctrl>k to reveal the map so I know where the other factions are. And I liked It. Please tell me I'm not the only SMAC Wimp...

Umbra: you've been too timid with your super-faction. I've found TALENT, 1 and 6 +10 social functions is a pretty effective game-winner (no drones and plenty of plusses. Or you could try my "omniscients" faction with 75 starting techs. They research really slowly because I don't like getting all those Transcendent Thought techs. I've really played with both those factions, although not for long with the omniscients (I was testing some unit-building ideas and couldn't be bothered playing through a normal game to research the required tech). So, no ... you're not the only wimp out there. I like sitting down and BEATING a game convincingly (watching my power graph look like a rock-climber's nightmare is kinda amusing too). For my regular games I play on Librarian level because that puts us all on an equal footing, aside from the fact that my stupidity isn't artifical.Cheers James |

I always play it on thinker level too. I can't stand the drone riot headaches and AI cheating at the transcend level. I often will reload a game if I don't like the outcome of a situation. I'm still learning this game after all. I certainly don't pretend to be an expert in it. That's about as far as my cheating goes. |

I play on Librarian level most of the time. and always with Ironman on. I play an occasional game at transcend, but like wise, the drone riots are absurd to me. |

Thanks for the feedback, I'm not the only one !I would say that I only ever used by Uber Faction once. I found that by 2300 I had built up a massive, continent spanning empire with a huge fortified standing army (needed to smack down the huge mindworm boils which kept erupting). The other computer factions had been of little consequence. What I has discovered was SimCentauri... It was fun for a while, just trying to build the ultimate colony, but once you've done it there is little incentive to do it again... (Could the same could be said for winning by a diplomatic or economic victory ?) Currently the UoP is teaching them damn Spartans the true value of research on a Conquest Only Thinker fest... Mwwahhhaahhahahaha.... |

I've never played on Trancend either but I'm only on my third game and I am on the level below that on Iron Man, It's a bit early to say how well I'm doing, I started accelerated and I've only played about 30 years.Oh I've never altered anything in any of the text files and all three games have been with the Spartans. I don't believe in any other type of victory but conquest although I allow the other options to give the AI something to aim at. |

SO maybe I'm an Ironman, but i'll post anyway...I played a single game of librarian, I won and felt I had done good bargain, by doing the purchase. Then just for the fun of it, I wanted to play a game of Transcend and won. And wohohohoho that just did it, I was bitten by the rhino of transcendence. Perhaps it was fun as a librarian Iron man, but being transcend Iron man multiplies the fun several times. Makes me puke to se you guys being so afraid, of something might go wrong. And then you don't give it an honest shot. |

I frankly don't see the point of Ironman. It gives you a +100% score bonus for basically, nothing. All it does is break jomts (saving to preemt crashes causes you to quit). |

It's kinda like a FPS in God mode. After a very bad day at work there is nothing like a good game of SMAC at one of the mid-level games with a slightly modified faction and just going out and kicking a**. For added enjoyment you can rename the factions, Mr. Jones of Finance I present these four planet busters for your approval. |

I found that adding INTEREST, 10 in the "fraction".txt file was quite helpfull. When your credit gets beond 10000 there is no stopping it, all tech's are still a bit slow in the beginning witch gives a challenge with diplomacy in the beginning of the game. |

The Panther, do you need a bag???I am not "afraid something might go wrong", I just enjoy the game more on Librarian Level (large world). If this makes you want to puke, then cover your keyboard, or you won't be able to play SMAC at any level. BTW, I posted my latest game in the TI thread. oops, guess I can't post here anymore

Have you seen the posts in the TI thread?????????? my goodness, change this, alter that, so the game will fit someone's stratagem?? Hockeypuck! talk about wimps. play the game as Firaxis designed it, if TI is too hard, then you always have this thread to post in |

I can do transcend conquerer victory, but I can't seem to let the ai give me a transcend victory. I can't stand ironman. I don't save to cheat, I turn pods off anyway. I save because of crashes. Anyway I still prefer thinker. I can actually transcend there. |

I Transcend on Transcend level, but I won't play Ironman. I load and reload whereever I pop a pod until I get what I want. I also like to periodicly turn on the map just to see where's the other factions are at. |

I played a few games at Librarian again It was kinda cool to relax and take a stroll along Beating AI Lane In some cases I was very annoyed because the habits I developed in Transcend Ironman are for naught because well--the problems don't exist. . .which sorta makes the stroll more pleasant I suppose. Not something I want extended explosure to though |

Ok, I admit it. I always play the middle levels with the occasional Super Faction when the AI pisses me off. I just don't think im ready to get my ass whooped in Transend just yet. But that doesn't make me a bad person just cause i suck too bad to play the big bad TI games. But, that's just me. I just hope there's someone out there who's worse than me |

I play at Thinker without ironman. I probably could win at transcend but never really gave it much of a shot. And like many people here, I leave ironman off to reduce the impact of crashes. I play as if it was on though, even when I do something stupid (whoops, forgot to pay the 48 energy left to buy that SP, now yang will get it ) Never played with a super faction or turned on the map. |

It's a faction editor. Can be downloaded from sidgames or apolyton. |
