My guess is it's the U.S. version. The U.S is more likely to export there than the U.K...Is now a bad time to mention 'bananas'?

You won't do any damage if you try to patch the 'wrong' version, I'm assuming (although I don't know this) that the patch will tell you it's the 'wrong' langauge version.
As you may have noticed, v.3.0 only works on the U.S. version (at this time). However, it is possible (if you find you have the U.K. version) to obtain a copy of the U.S. version of the file "terran.exe" by asking some of the nice people here or hearabouts.
That should be sufficient to change the langauge version of your friends copy of SMAC. I know that you could do exactly the same trick with C3.
